Silva: Time to give Ryan Mountcastle another look

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Ryan Mountcastle is coming off a strong week of hitting, so Drew Silva suggests giving him another look if he's available on the waiver wire.

DREW SILVA: Orioles first baseman and corner outfielder Ryan Mountcastle had some draft day buzz in certain fantasy circles this spring after batting .333 with an .878 OPS across his first 140 Major League plate appearances last season. But the 24-year-old might be sitting on the waiver wire right now in some deeper formats after mostly struggling through the first two months of the 2021 campaign. It's time to give him another look.

Mountcastle won American League Player of the Week honors for May 31 to June 6th after going 11 for 24 with four home runs, three doubles, seven runs scored, and 10 RBIs in that span of just six games. And if you stretch the sample size back to the middle of May, you'll find a batting average above .300 and an OPS north of 1,000. He also did manage to steal three bases in April, his worst month overall at the plate.

Listed as a top-100 prospect four years running from 2018 to the spring of this year, Mountcastle has the talent to fully blossom into a key component in Baltimore's ongoing, aggressive organizational rebuild. Maybe it's already beginning to happen for him.
