MINTY BETS: It's time for our weekly MLB Stock Up/Stock Down segment. I am Minty Bets and joining me as always is Ariel Epstein. We are here to tell you who's hot and who's not in the eyes of us.
So let's get started, Ariel. Who are you stocking up on? Who are you high on this week?
ARIEL EPSTEIN: Minty, I'm stocking up on the Houston Astros. Although the Astros already lead their division in the American League West, I still see a really bright future ahead for them on a game-by-game basis. The next 10 series for the Astros are all against teams below .500. 10 straight, I'm not exaggerating.
Every team they're going up against in the next 10 series are below .500. This is also one of the better road teams in the American League. The Astros are 14 and 8 straight up this season when playing on the road. The Astros stock, it's going to be on the rise, Minty, the next month.
MINTY BETS: OK, all right, I like it, I like it. For my stock up pick, I'm looking at the AL Central. Now preseason, the White Sox were the favorites to win the division at minus .190. Who was the favorite after that? The Minnesota Twins at plus .600.
Now I'm not stocking up on a division winner for the AL Central, but I am stocking up on the Minnesota Twins, as they hold the best record in the AL Central. And they've got a relatively easy schedule ahead of them. For the rest of the month, they face the A's, the Royals, the Tigers, the Royals again, and the Tigers again.
Both Kansas City and Detroit are bottom two in that division. And the Twins, in the American League, they're fourth in batting average and fifth in OPS with runners on base. All right, Ariel. Who are you stocking down on?
ARIEL EPSTEIN: I'm stocking down on the Chicago White Sox. It's funny because we're going through the same divisions. At least they're correlated.
The White Sox, although their starting rotation is one of the best in baseball, when you look at the bullpen of the White Sox, they're bottom 10 in bullpen ERA. You need depth in the playoffs in order to go far. The White Sox aren't making any kind of playoff run if their bullpen doesn't get better.
Scoring with runners in scoring position, that's really important, too, and the White Sox rank 21st in Major League Baseball in OPS with runners in scoring position. If they can't score with runners in scoring position and the White Sox bullpen doesn't get better, I'm stocking down on this White Sox team. At least for now, Minty.
MINTY BETS: All righty. Well, for my stock down pick, I'm looking at the AL West. I'm stocking down on the Texas Rangers.
Now I think they were a little too hyped up coming into the season in my opinion. They're currently fourth in the AL West. And just kind of for the same reasons I was stocking up on the Twins, I'm stocking down on the Rangers because of their schedule.
For the rest of the month of May, they face the Angels, the Astros, the Angels again, the A's, and then the Rays. I believe they'll lose more games than they'll win. They're currently bottom three in the American League in hitting, so I'm going to fave the Rangers for the time being.
