Vets' Hernandez, Carroll's Vasquez voted preseason high school soccer players of the year

District play is under way in the Coastal Bend in Class 4A and crossover games are being played in Class 5A as the soccer season ramps up in Corpus Christi.

After a week of voting, readers have voted Veterans Memorial senior David Hernandez and Carroll senior Julia Vasquez as their choice for preseason boys and girls soccer player of the year.

Vasquez was one of the top goal-scorers in the region last season, garnering All-South Texas first team accolades and is off to another strong start.

The forward has netted 20 goals and three assists so far this season.

Vasquez received 72,771 of the 146,442 votes cast, which was 49.7% of all votes.

Beeville's Emily Olivares was second and received 37,025 votes with London's Jordan Jarrin garnering 15,462 votes.

Hernandez was an All-South Texas second team honoree as a junior, scoring 16 goals and contributing 14 assists for the Eagles.

Hernandez received 50,204 votes of the 133,816 votes cast, which was 37.5% of all votes.

Flour Bluff's Zach Ewing tallied 36,631 votes and Carroll's Ginacarlo Mangiarulo received 19,925 votes.
