Vestal hurdler Tim Smith a public school state track champion

Vestal senior Tim Smith was celebrated Friday as a top finisher on Day 1 of state track & field championships at Middletown High School.

Smith ran 54.55 seconds in the Division 1 (large school) 400-meter hurdles race. That was second behind David Davitt, a junior from Archbishop Stepanic of the Catholic High School Athletic Association (54.24), but tops among public school participants_ thus, a state title.

Section 4’s depth was in evidence for boys’ pole vault competition, headed by Vincent VanMaaren of Delhi and Moss Dengler of Ithaca, each clearing 14 feet, 6 inches to place third and fourth overall, respectively. VanMaaren was second in D2 _ with Owego’s Gabe Snyder (14-0) a spot back _ and Dengler second in D1.

Vestal’s Michael Chernova was ninth overall at 13-6.

Panayiota Anastos of Maine-Endwell was runner-up by darn-near the narrowest of margins in the D2 girls shot put. Anastos putted 37-9¼ on her fourth of six attempts, only to be headed by a 37-10 from Kaylee Oswald of Wellsville.

Waverly’s quartet of Kayleb Bechy, Jerrell Sackett, Micah Chandler, Ralph Johnson teamed for a 42.03 in the D2 boys 400 relay, back of a 41.82 by UPrep Rochester.

Carlea Davis of Dryden qualified No. 2 for DII girls 100 hurdles, her 15.9 in the prelims trailing a 15.29 by Linnea Neureuther of Springville. Likewise a No. 2 DII qualifier is Dayzin Legare in the boys 100. He ran 10.73 to a 10.55 by Jadon Spain of James I. O’Neill.

But a bit later? Legare topped D2 200 prelims with a 21.63, with Waverly’s Ralph Johnson sixth at 22.12.

Liam Cody of Vestal ran fourth in the boys 800 on the strength of a 1:53.71. Last to finish was the girls 3,000, in which Corning’s Sarah Lawson’s 9:47.87 was good for fourth.

Horseheads’ Tess Eisner finished fourth in D1 in the girls long jump (17-6¼).

The meet is to resume 10 a.m. Saturday.
