Women’s hockey

Connecticut 3, Vermont 0

Note: No. 11 Connecticut (17-6-1, 14-3-1) scored once in each frame to send visiting Vermont (9-15-1, 7-11) to its seventh straight defeat.

Men’s hockey

Vermont 2, New Hampshire 1

V: Jens Richards 1G. Massimo Lombardi 1G. Thomas Sinclair 2A. Chris Theodore 1A. Luca Munzenberger 1A. Gabe Carriere 31 saves.

NH: Robert Cronin 1G. Jakob Hellsten 14 saves.

Note: Lombardi's second-period goal at 12:51 broke a 1-all tie and propelled Vermont (11-11-1, 5-7-1) over 17th-ranked New Hampshire (12-8-1, 5-5-1).

SATURDAY, JAN. 27

Women’s basketball

Vermont 61, Bryant 35

V: Keira Hanson 16 points, 4 steals. Emma Utterback 14 points. Andjela Matic 11 points, 5 rebounds. Paula Gonzalez 10 points. Bella Vito 13 rebounds.

B: Mariona Planes Fortuny 10 points.

Note: The Catamounts (14-7, 6-1) held Bryant to 25% shooting from the floor, including 18.8% on 3-point attempts, to roll to their fifth straight victory. Vermont posted its largest margin on the glass (46-26) and totaled 14 second-chance points and 29 from its bench. Behind Hanson's four 3s, the Catamounts finished with 10 3-pointers made.

Turning point: Ahead 35-23 with 5:29 left in the third quarter, Vermont unloaded a 14-2 run to take command.

Vermont coach Alisa Kresge (via UVM news release): "I was really happy with our defensive effort today. We set the tone from the beginning and had some key defensive performances off the bench. It was a collective team effort on both sides of the ball. I am really pleased with – coming into a game that was scary, Bryant was a really hot team – trying to set the tone and not let them have any life from the start, I thought we did a good job."

B: Earl Timberlake 16 points. Sherif Gross-Bullock 12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists. Rafael Pinzon 12 points, 7 rebounds.

Note: The Catamounts (16-5, 6-0) dominated in the second half to extend their nation-leading conference winning streak to 21 straight games and seize sole possession of first place in America East.

Turning point: Down 28-25 at the break, Vermont opened the second stanza with a 9-0 spurt and never looked back for its sixth straight victory.

Vermont coach John Becker (via UVM news release): "Great way to close out the weekend. Another great road win against a good Bryant team in a hostile environment. Really proud of the guys and the way they battled. Looking forward to being home next week."

Note: The Catamounts are 9-15-2 overall, 7-11-1 in Hockey East. Saturday was Vermont's first scoreless draw in nearly six years. The Catamounts also won 25 of 38 faceoffs.

Note: No. 17 New Hampshire (13-8-1, 6-5-1) staked to a 4-1 lead after the first period. The Catamounts (11-12-1, 5-8-1) got to within 5-3 on Carriere's assist to Richards before UNH struck for insurance. Vermont won 37 of 62 faceoffs.
