Matthews, VanMeter win CMC Track & Field overall gold

South Hagerstown's Ethan VanMeter and Boonsboro's Caroline Matthews won overall championships, and eight other individuals and four relay teams won Gambrill Division titles in the Central Maryland Conference Track & Field Championships on Thursday at School Stadium in Hagerstown.

Smithsburg's girls claimed the Gambrill Division team title, scoring 169 points to edge Middletown by 10.5 points.

VanMeter, a senior and the reigning Class 3A state boys shot put champion indoors, threw a personal-record 51 feet, 7 1/2 inches to claim the CMC title. He also finished third overall in the discus (134-2).

Matthews, a junior and a three-time Class 1A girls state champion in the 3,200, claimed the CMC title in the event in a PR of 11:10.65.

Gambrill champions included:

  • Smithsburg senior Cameron Rejonis, an eight-time state gold medalist, in the boys 400 (51.15, second overall).

  • Leopards sophomore Jenna Howe in the girls 100 (13.13, second overall) and 200 (26.55, second overall). She also placed third overall in the 400 (1:00.17).

  • Smithsburg sophomore Kayla Hawbecker in the girls 800 (2:25.55, third overall).

  • Leopards sophomore Taylor King in the girls 300 hurdles (48.84).

  • Williamsport sophomore Richard Sanon in the boys 110 hurdles (15.93).

  • Wildcats freshman Olivia Smith in the girls triple jump (31-10).

  • Boonsboro senior Kaitlyn Queen in the girls shot put (33-0 1/2, second overall) and discus (97-10, third overall).

  • Warriors senior Michaela Carney in the girls pole vault (9 feet).

Smithsburg also won Gambrill titles in four relays. The girls won three, in the 4x100 (51.62, third overall), the 4x800 (8:30.02, third overall) and the 4x200 (1:49.73). The Leopards also won the boys 4x400 (3:43.39).

North Hagerstown's boys secured five individual top-three overall finishes and three more in relays. Caleb Owusu-Ayim finished second in the 100 (11.32), Ryder Johnston took second in the 300 hurdles (39.40), Mio Desclous was second in the pole vault (12-6), Jacob O'Neil was third in the 3,200 (10:35.63) and DU Mbeli placed third in the shot put (43-9 3/4). The Hubs were second in the 4x200 (1:31.61) and third in the 4x400 (3:32.65) and 4x800 (8:30.02).

North's girls finished third overall in the 4x200 (1:48.60).
