UWS women's basketball dominates glass, beats Lakeland

Nov. 28—SUPERIOR — Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball had a 47-32 advantage in rebounding with two players in double figures on Tuesday, Nov. 28, a key facet of a 72-57 home win over Lakeland at Mertz Mertorelli Gym.

Two Yellowjackets, Charlotte Ferstl and Elise Besonen finished with double-doubles.

After an 11-2 run in the first quarter put the Yellowjackets in an early hole, UWS recovered and played most of the midgame close. The Yellowjackets then caught fire in the fourth quarter to pull away, scoring 27 points in the frame and finishing the contest on a 25-9 run.

UWS was 8-of-15 from the field in the fourth, its best quarter by shooting percentage by far, and 11-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Ferstl, a 6-foot-3 freshman forward, finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Besonen, a 5-3 junior guard, had 11 rebounds to go with her 15 points.

Elsa Olson kicked in 10 points for UWS off the bench.

Kerstin Sauerbrei led Lakeland with 13 points.

UWS (3-4) opens Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Friday, Dec. 8 with a home game vs. Crown.
