UTEP women's basketball team falls in OT to California Baptist

The UTEP women's basketball team lost 90-87 in overtime to California Baptist on Saturday afternoon in Riverside, California.

The Lancers outscored UTEP 11-8 in the overtime period after the game was tied at 79 after regulation when UTEP's Jane Asinde scored a two-point basket.

The Miners are now 3-1 and the Lancers 4-0.

How the Lancers won the game

California Baptist outscored UTEP 36-21 at the free throw line and had four players score in double figures. The Lancers also outscored UTEP 19-4 in fast break points.

Chloe Webb led the Lancers with 24 points and Anaiah Tu'ua added 19 points. Nae Nae Calhoun had seven assists.

Other than the free throw difference, the game was contested on even terms. Both teams had 41 rebounds, UTEP had one more turnover (18-17) and the Miners shot 33% from 3-point range and the Lancers were 32% from beyond the line.

UTEP highlights

The Miners had three players score in double figures. Jane Asinde led the way with 19 points, Mahri Petree scored 14 and Erin Wilson added 12. Asinde added a game-best 13 rebounds and Wilson added seven rebounds. Delma Zita led the Miners with a game-high nine assists.

High scoring first half

The Miners led 22-15 after one quarter and 42-39 at halftime. UTEP made 6 of 14 from 3-point range and 8 of 11 from the free throw line.

Ten Miners scored in the opening 20 minutes, led by Wilson and Petree with eight points each. Zita dished out four assists and Aliyah Stanton had three assists as the Miners had 10 overall as a team.

Anaiah Tu'ua led California Baptist with 14 points, nine of which came from the free throw line. Overall CBU made 22 of 27 from the free throw line.

The Miners stay on the road and head to St. Petersburg, Fla., to compete in the St. Pete Showcase on Wednesday and Thursday. The Miners play Lamar at 11 a.m. Mountain time on Wednesday and TCU at 11 a.m. Mountain on Thursday.
