Caleb Williams, USC football defeat Arizona State in Pac-12 Conference game

The Arizona State Sun Devils hosted the USC Trojans in a Week 4 Pac-12 college football game on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

Look back at our score updates from the game.

Caleb Williams, USC thwart ASU's upset attempt in Pac-12 college football game

Behind five touchdowns from star quarterback Caleb Williams, the USC Trojans defeated Arizona State 42-28 in Tempe on Saturday night to move to 4-0 on the season.

But it wasn't easy for USC, which led 35-28 with 8:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Williams went 20-for-31 passing for three touchdowns, while also running for two scores.

Brenden Rice had seven catches for 133 yards and two of those receiving touchdowns. Tahj Washington had USC's other receiving score.

Marshawn Lloyd rushed for 154 yards on 14 carries for the Trojans, who play Colorado next week.

ASU running back Cameron Skattebo had a huge game for the Sun Devils, helping ASU stay within striking distance for most of the game.

He had 20 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, while also catching four passes for 79 yards and a score. He also was 2-for-3 passes for 42 yards, punted the ball once and converted a 2-point conversion in the game.

ASU fell to 1-3 on the season, but impressed in the loss, especially after getting shut out against Fresno State last week, 29-0.

The Sun Devils play at California next week.

ASU used its third starting quarterback of the season in the game with Drew Pyne going 21-for-36 for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He had one pass intercepted.

Skattebo had one of those touchdown receptions. Elijhah Badger, who finished with nine catches for 88 yards, had the other.

ASU was a 33.5 point underdog in the game, but didn't look like it, playing USC tough all night.

Final score: USC 42, ASU 28

ASU comes up short on drive against USC

The Sun Devils turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, giving the ball back to USC with 1:40 left in the game.

ASU's offensive line wasn't able to withstand USC's pressure. USC should be able to run out the clock now and get a 42-28 win over ASU.

USC brings lead back to 14 points with another quick strike against ASU

The ASU defense is wearing down.

USC just went 75 yards over three plays to take a 42-28 lead with 7:17 left.

Caleb Williams hit Tahj Washington on a 45-yard touchdown pass for the score.

Williams is now 20-for-31 passing with three touchdowns in this game.

He has also rushed for two touchdowns.

Score: USC 42, ASU 28 (7:07 left in fourth quarter)

Cameron Skattebo refuses to go down on fourth-down run for Sun Devils

Cameron Skattebo is having himself a game.

The ASU running back just caught a short pass on 4th and 7 at ASU's 48, broke a couple of tackles and somehow didn't go down and ran 52 yards for a touchdown to pull ASU within 35-28 with 8:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Skattebo has 17 rush attempts for 96 yards and a touchdown in the game.

He also has three catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.

And he is 2-for-3 passing for 42 yards.

Score: USC 35, ASU 28 (8:05 left in fourth quarter)

USC gets ball back on ASU turnover, extends lead with touchdown

USC's Solomon Byrd stripped ASU's Drew Pyne of the ball, forcing a fumble, which USC recovered, giving the Trojans the ball at the ASU 44.

USC then took just two plays to get a touchdown, getting a 15-yard run from MarShawn Lloyd and then a 29-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Williams to Brenden Rice on a play where Williams avoided a sack and then found Rice open in the end zone.

USC then converted a 2-point conversion attempt with a Williams pass to Mario Williams to make it a 35-21 score.

ASU's defense has come up with several stops against the Trojans tonight, but the offense hasn't been able to capitalize after those stops.

Score: USC 35, ASU 21 (10:31 left in fourth quarter)

ASU, USC trade punts in fourth quarter

ASU had to punt the ball pack to USC after a drive of six plays and 29 yards.

USC then went 3-and-out punting the ball back to ASU.

Drew Pyne and the ASU offense could use another good drive here.

USC leads ASU after 3 quarters, 27-21

They've played three quarters in Tempe and the Trojans hold a 27-21 lead over ASU.

USC has a 410-251 advantage in total yards, but ASU has made several key plays to keep itself in the game.

USC has nine penalties for 70 yards in this game. ASU has three penalties for 11 yards.

Score: USC 27, ASU 21 (end of third quarter)

ASU defense steps up again vs. USC

This game has gotten very interesting.

ASU's Drew Pyne threw an interception that gave USC the ball at ASU's 42 yard line, but the Sun Devils' defense didn't allow the Trojans to score after stopping USC on 4th and 3 at ASU's 12-yard line on USC's ensuing possession.

USC went six plays and 30 yards on the drive, but came up empty when Caleb Williams' pass to Michael Jackson III was broken up.

ASU defense bends, but doesn't break vs. USC

The Sun Devils forced another field goal by USC, this one a 36-yarder from Denis Lynch, after USC had 1st and goal at the ASU 4.

That's a win for Arizona State.

USC had a 43-yard rush from MarShawn Lloyd and a 36-yard pass from Caleb Williams to Zachariah Branch to set up the first and goal, but lost yardage on an offensive pass interference call before ASU's defense stepped up.

The crowd at Mountain America Stadium is into it as they should be. Their team is staying with USC.

Score: USC 27, ASU 21 (6:29 left in third quarter)

ASU football answers vs. USC with touchdown pass

The Sun Devils had to step up after USC took a 9-point lead.

It did.

ASU went 75 yards over five plays to pull within 24-21 on a 25-yard pass from Drew Pyne to Elijhah Badger and then a 2-point conversion run by Cameron Skattebo.

Skattebo also had runs of 10, 4, 3 and 18 yards on the drive.

He has 13 carries for 81 yards in the game, with one of ASU's touchdowns. He is also 2-for-3 passing for 42 yards, doing all he can to keep ASU close against the Trojans.

And the Sun Devils are close.

Score: USC 24, ASU 21 (9:25 left in third quarter)

USC extends lead with 53-yard field goal vs. ASU

ASU's defense stepped up with a key sack of Caleb Williams on 3rd-and-4 at the ASU 37, but Denis Lynch hit a 53-yard field goal to give USC a 24-13 lead.

It just barely had enough leg on the kick.

USC's drive went for 28 yards in seven plays.

Now, the ASU offense has to step up.

Score: USC 24, ASU 13 (11:13 left in third quarter)

Arizona State punts after five plays to start second half vs. USC

The Sun Devils were forced to punt after going 11 yards on their opening drive of the second half, missing a prime chance to cut into the Trojans' lead.

Drew Pyne threw three straight incomplete passes on the drive. Josh Carlson's punt only went 24 yards, as well, giving USC a short field to start its first drive of the second half at USC's 35, and putting pressure on the Sun Devils' defense to step up.

Surprise! ASU football in game vs. USC at the half

We don't know what the second half of this Arizona State vs. USC game will entail.

Perhaps USC will start to run away from the overmatched and depleted Sun Devils.

But you have to give credit to Kenny Dillingham and his team for the first 30 minutes of the game.

The Sun Devils trail No. 5 USC, a 33.5-point favorite in the game, 21-13 at the end of the second quarter in Tempe.

And they only trail by eight despite being outgained 268-136 in yards.

And despite seeing their starting QB, Drew Pyne, have 33 passing yards in the first half.

The Sun Devils looked absolutely abysmal in a 29-0 loss to Fresno State a week ago.

On Saturday night against USC, they look vastly improved. Not a bad turnaround from last week.

Will ASU shock USC Saturday night?

Maybe not.

But it is at least in position to have a chance to do so through two quarters.

That is something many (most?) wouldn't have thought possible before kickoff on Saturday night.

Score: USC 21, ASU 13 (halftime)

Sun Devils force Trojans to punt, enter half down eight points

ASU's defense stepped up and forced USC to punt after a 5-play, 35-yard drive, giving the Sun Devils the ball back with 23 seconds left in the first half.

ASU ran one play before time ran out in the first half, with the Sun Devils trailing 21-13.

ASU will get the ball to start the second half.

ASU pulling out all the stops to stay with USC

ASU is attempting to pull out all the stops in this game against USC.

ASU RB Cameron Skattebo threw a 25-yard pass to Elijhah Badger on 4th and 5 at the ASU 29 to keep the Sun Devils' next drive alive.

Kyson Brown also had a 15-yard run on 3rd and 10 at the USC 46 to keep the drive alive.

Skattebo also completed a 17-yard pass to quarterback Drew Pyne for a first down on the drive.

The drive ended when Skattebo misfired on another pass on 3rd and 5 at the USC 12. QB Drew Pyne lined up wide on the play and Skattebo overthrew an open Brown on the play.

Dario Longhetto hit a 30-yard field goal to pull ASU within 21-13.

ASU's drive went 64 yards over 13 plays. It took 6:02 off the clock.

Crazily, Skattebo, a running back, is 2-for-3 in this game for 42 yards. he has more passing yards than Payne, who is 7-for-14 for 29 yards.

Score: USC 21, Arizona State 13 (2:21 left in second quarter)

USC extends lead after ASU attempts onside kick

ASU attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, that USC recovered, but you have to love the aggressiveness by the Sun Devils.

Kenny Dillingham ranted about "playing to win" earlier this week and he is playing that way so far, even if USC extended its lead after the onside kick, going 43 yards over five plays and getting another touchdown run from Caleb Williams, this one from 1-yard out.

Still, ASU isn't backing down.

Williams is having himself a game with two rushing touchdown and one passing score.

He is 10-for-12 for 130 yards passing in the game.

Score: USC 21, Arizona State 10

ASU football gets field goal after nice drive vs. USC

The Sun Devils did put together a nice drive against USC, but they faltered late and had to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Dario Longhetto.

But they did drive the ball on the Trojans, going 48 yards over 13 plays and taking 5:47 off the clock and allowing their defense to get some rest (while also keeping USC's explosive offense off the field).

Cameron Skattebo has impressed for ASU so far, with six carries for 37 yards and a touchdown in this game.

Score: USC 14, ASU 10 (10:28 left in second quarter)

Some positives for ASU in first quarter against USC

The Sun Devils are going to have to play a very clean game to have any kind of chance to upset the highly ranked Trojans.

They have done that so far.

Through the first quarter, ASU hasn't committed a penalty, while USC has six penalties for 35 yards.

Arizona State doesn't have a turnover, either, while the Trojans have the pivotal mistake that led to ASU's touchdown.

ASU could really use a nice sustained drive to give its defense some rest and put some pressure on USC's defense.

USC entered the game as a 33.5-point favorite, so the Sun Devils are obviously viewed to be overmatched, but they aren't playing that overmatched right now.

USC pulls ahead with touchdown on 4th down vs. ASU

ASU forced a 4th and 7 at the ASU 43 for USC on the next Trojans possession, but Caleb Williams found Brendan Rice for a 43-yard touchdown on the play to give USC a 14-7 lead.

USC's drive went 87 yards in nine plays and took 5:30.

Williams is now 8-for-10 for 114 yards and the touchdown passing as well as the touchdown rushing.

USC has a 190-15 advantage in total yards and a 12:01 to 1:44 advantage in time of possession.

Still, the Sun Devils are playing hard, obviously pumped up for the game against the highly favored Trojans.

USC almost turned the ball over on consecutive plays as the Trojans' Zachariah Branch was initially ruled to have fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but the call was overturned on review.

Score: USC 14, ASU 7 (1:15 left in first quarter)

Arizona State capitalizes off USC turnover

The Sun Devils did in fact capitalize off USC's mistake as Cameron Skattebo ran in from 15 yards out on 3rd and 10 at the USC 15 to tie the game against the Trojans, 7-7.

The score ended a huge dry spell for the Sun Devils.

ASU had not scored a point since Elijhah Badger caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Rashada with 10:07 left in the second quarter against Oklahoma State in Week 2.

ASU was shut out against Fresno State in Week 3, 29-0.

That shutout against Fresno State was the Sun Devils' first shutout at home since Nov. 12, 1988, a 50-0 loss to USC.

ASU will take it.

Score: Arizona State 7, USC 7 (6:57 left in first quarter)

ASU gets a break early vs. USC

The Trojans just gave ASU the ball at the USC 15 when Caleb Williams and MarShawn Lloyd botched a handoff on their first play of their second possession.

Can ASU capitalize off the mistake?

ASU offense goes 3-and-out on first possession vs. USC

Drew Pyne got the start at quarterback for the ASU football team after exiting the Sun Devils' 29-0 loss to Fresno State last week with an injury.

It didn't start off on the right foot.

ASU went 3-and-out on the possession, with Pyne throwing three incomplete passes.

ASU has struggled to get anything going on offense this season and it has led to their defense getting worn out with other teams dominating time of possession.

This game isn't off to a good start in that regard for the Sun Devils, with the Trojans already holding a 6:14 to :26 advantage in time of possession.

USC scores touchdown on first possession against ASU

The Trojans have had a lot of success on opening drives under Lincoln Riley, having scored 12 opening-drive touchdowns in Riley's 17 games as the team's head coach entering the game against ASU on Saturday.

Make that 13 opening-drive touchdowns in 18 games.

USC marched 75 yards in 12 plays over 6:14 to take a 7-0 lead over Arizona State, getting the touchdown on a 1-yard run from quarterback Caleb Williams.

ASU had a chance to stop the Trojans early in the drive, but Williams completed a 23-yard pass to Zachariah Branch on 3rd and 20 at the USC 15 after USC had consecutive false start and delay of game penalties.

Williams went 4-for-6 for 39 yards passing on the opening drive.

Score: USC 7, ASU (8:46 left in first quarter)

Ray Anderson resignation as ASU athletic director post deleted

A post saying that Arizona State Athletic Director Ray Anderson has resigned was deleted Saturday evening before the ASU football team's game against USC.

The post, from Doug Franz on X, had said: "Ray Anderson, the Athletic Director of Arizona State, has resigned."

It prompted a lot of speculation about the future of the ASU AD, who has come under fire for his handling of the Arizona State athletic department.

The post from the former Arizona Sports 98.7 FM radio host, who now operates a podcast, Doug Franz Unplugged, was up for several hours Saturday before being removed.

Several ASU insiders posted on social media that they hadn't been able to confirm the report, including The Arizona Republic's Michelle Gardner.

ASU has not issued a statement on the report.

Anderson was seen on the ASU football field at Mountain America Stadium before the game.

Could Ray Anderson soon be out as the Athletic Director at Arizona State University?

While fans have been clamoring for the ASU AD to be fired since the investigation into recruiting allegations under former coach Herm Edwards came to light, a report Saturday indicated that Anderson may resign from his position at ASU.

The report, from Doug Franz on X, said: "Ray Anderson, the Athletic Director of Arizona State, has resigned."

Franz, a former radio host on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, currently runs a podcast, Doug Franz Unplugged.

Speculation swirled on social media after Franz's report. ASU has not issued a statement.
