Urquidy stringing together wins for managers

Drew Silva explains why Houston Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy is a solid fantasy option due to his increased command and strong supporting cast.

DREW SILVA: Hate them or love them, the Houston Astros are the hottest team in Major League Baseball as we approach the midway point of the 2021 regular season. It's the hitting, but it's also the pitching. And 26-year-old right-hander Jose Urquidy has been a big part of the ladder.

Urquidy was sporting a 5.14 ERA through four starts on April 21. But he has since rattled off an ERA of 2.62 across his last nine outings. And the Astros are 8-1 in those nine games. His somewhat mediocre strikeout rate might prevent Urquidy from finishing the year as a top 25 fantasy starter. But he offers immense upside nonetheless, in wins and especially whip.

His career walks per nine innings is 1.7. And it's sitting at 1.5 this season. With that elite command and the excellent supporting cast around him in Houston, he's an easy plug-in on fantasy rosters whenever he takes the mound. And with MLB suddenly cracking down on foreign substance use by pitchers, there could be a little more of a level playing field in the swing and miss department.
