Union City track sweeps John Greene Track Invitational

MENDON — The Union City Chargers made it a clean sweep of Mendon’s John Greene Track and Field Invitational on Friday, with the boys and girls teams bringing home championship trophies.

Union City girls hold off Schoolcraft for win

The Union City girls track team took first place at Mendon on Friday, scoring 132.5 points, 10 points ahead of the runner-up team from Schoolcraft who finished with 122.5 points. Centreville finished in third with 90.5 points.

Nevada Gillons once again led the way for Union City as the junior swept the hurdle events. Gillons won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.91 seconds and the 300 hurdles in a time of 49.09 seconds. Gillons also took second place in the long jump and first as part of the 400-meter relay team along with teammates Alaina Labar, Addison Miller, and Attica Hoath in a time of 53.47 seconds.

Also notching a win for Union City was Parker Williams who took first in the 400 in a time of 1 minute, 5.38 seconds

Finishing inside the top six for the Chargers was Naomi Schwark, fourth place in the 100 and fifth place in the high jump; Attica Hoath, third place in the 200; Willow Austin, fourth place in the 200; Alissa Skirka, fifth place in the 800; Skyler Fraley, fourth place in the 1,600 and fifth place in the 3,200; Allison Gautsche, fifth place in the 1,600 and fourth place in the 3,200; Alaina Labar, third place in the 100 hurdles; Kylie Creech, third place in the 100 hurdles, second place in the pole vault, and second place in the 300 hurdles; the 1,600 relay team of Austin, Hoath, Skirka, and Williams, third place; the 3,200 relay team of Skirka, Williams, Gautsche, and Fraley, second place; Felina Couch, fourth place in the discus; Addison Miller, fourth place in the pole vault; Labar, third place in the long jump; and Kiera Taylor, sixth place in the pole vault.

Union City boys squeeze past Centreville for championship

The Charger boys also brought home a title, winning the event with a score of 134.5 points. Centreville finished in second with 129 points, while Mendon finished third with 94 points.

Union City had one multi-event winner as senior throwing machine Logan Cole swept up in the pits, winning the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 5 inches and the discus with a throw of 153 feet, 10 inches.

Union City's 3,200-meter relay team remains unbeaten on the season, as the team of Jason Shoop, Cohen Burdick, Malachi Payne, and Ben Gautsche took first place in a time of 8 minutes, 36.39 seconds.

Also bringing home gold for the Chargers and their championship effort were Gautsche, first place in the 1,600 in a time of 4:42.52 and Shoop with a win in the 3,200 run in a time of 10:42.48.

Rounding out the Union City effort with a top six finish was Riley Laird, second place in the 100; Kent Robbins, fourth place in the 200 and sixth place in the high jump; Gautsche, second place in the 800; Burdick, third place in the 800 and fourth place in the 1,600; Payne, fifth place in the 800; Noah June, third place in the 3,200; Nathaniel Maurer, second place in the 110 hurdles and third place in the 300 hurdles; David Wilson, sixth place in the 110 hurdles; Kenny Case, sixth place in the 300 hurdles and fifth place in the pole vault; the 400 relay team of Robbins, Owen Kincaid, Braydon Osborn, and Laird, third place; the 800 relay team of Maurer, Robbins, Laird, and Kincaid, third place; the 1,600 relay team of Maurer, Burdick, Gautsche, and Case, second place; Jonas Burdick, sixth place in the pole vault; Shoop, fourth place in the long jump; and Braydon Osborn, sixth place in the long jump.

Union City will have one final tune-up before Regionals next Friday as the Chargers will face off with Athens on Monday.
