UNCW softball to face Georgia in NCAA Tournament Athens Regional

The UNCW Seahawks softball team is heading to Georgia to play in the Athens Regional of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

The Seahawks will be traveling to Athens where they'll face a four-team double-elimination bracket that runs from May 17-19 with a chance to advance to the super regional round the following week. If the team can progress past the tournament's first two rounds, it will earn a spot in the Women's College World Series starting May 30 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

UNCW (33-21) earned an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, defeating Campbell to claim its second CAA Championship in three years. The Seahawks earned the program's first CAA championship and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2022.

"We are extremely excited to head to the Athens Regional, I know our girls were hoping to end up there so this is perfect the way that it worked out for us," UNCW softball coach Ashley Wade said.

After trailing the entire game, UNCW took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning in a winner-takes-all championship game against Campbell Saturday. The Seahawks went 4-1 overall in the tournament, falling only to Campbell in the first of Saturday's championship games.

UNCW, the No. 4 seed in the Athens Regional, will face top seed and host Georgia, which earned the No. 11 national seed. Liberty and Charlotte will also compete in the regional.
