UNC football set to hire Freddie Kitchens as tight end coach
It didn’t take long for Mack Brown and the UNC football program to find a new tight ends coach.
Just a week ago, it was announced that John Lilly was leaving the program and heading to the NFL to join the Carolina Panthers. Now, the Tar Heels are set to hire Freddie Kitchens as their new coach for the position.
The Football Scoop reported the news on Monday morning with Inside Carolina confirming it shortly after. Kitchens spent the 2022 season in the college ranks, serving as a football analyst for South Carolina.
Kitchens has experience at both the college and NFL level in his coaching career. Prior to the stint with the Gamecocks, Kitchens served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2019. He was also the tight ends coach for the New York Giants in 2020 and then served as interim offensive coordinator for the Giants in 2021.
He’s also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals in his career.

As for the college ranks, Kitchens got his start at Glenville State in 1999 and then joined Nick Saban’s staff at LSU in 2000. From there he went to North Texas from 2001-03, and Mississippi State in 2004 and 2005 before heading to the NFL.
