U.S. Open payout, purse: Prize money breakdown by place at Pinehurst No. 2
The USGA will get out its checkbook on Sunday as the U.S. Open wraps up at Pinehurst No. 2.
The association announced its total purse and payout for the winner earlier this week, then set up its pay by place on Saturday afternoon.
While it's a record payday for the champion again this year, there's also some hefty amounts of cash set up for others in the field. For the names who are having a big week – like Davis Thompson, who's 84th on the money list but currently in a tie for 16th – a big result could set up the rest of the season.
Also, with three amateurs in the field who do not receive a finisher's check, there are 71 places this year for monetary payouts.
Here's a look at the payout totals for the U.S. Open.

US Open prize money 2024: Payout, purse
The USGA announced earlier in the week that the total purse will be $21.5 million, and the winner gets $4.3 million.
Also, all professionals who missed the cut Friday received $10,000 each. It's the first time that prize has been awarded.
The total purse went up by $1.5 million from 2023, but most of that increased money is focused on the top positions.
US Open winner payout
The $4.3 million check to the winner is a good bit higher than in 2023.
A year ago, Wyndham Clark made $3.6 million for winning at Los Angeles Country Club. Runner-up Rory McIlroy made $2.16 million, while third-place Scottie Scheffler made more than $1.4 million.
US Open prize money for top 10
It's a small bump for the players beyond the top places, especially in the top 10.
A 10th-place finish at Pinehurst would be worth $502,174; a four-way tie for 10th in 2023 netted each player more than $435,000.
