Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins receiver, investigated for assault at marina: What we know

Tyreek Hill faces legal trouble after the Miami Dolphins' star receiver was accused of hitting an employee at a North Miami Beach marina.

On Father's Day, a worker for a charter company at Haulover Marina accused the 29-year-old Hill of assault and battery. The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed an investigation was underway, and the State Attorney's Office said Monday it was reviewing evidence in the case.

The employee told police he was willing to press charges against Hill, who has a history of domestic assault and battery charges stemming back to his time in college.

Here's what we know about the case and whether Hill could be suspended from the upcoming NFL season:

Why is Tyreek Hill being investigated?

According to NBC 6 in Miami, a man working for Kelly Fishing Fleet was working on a charter boat June 18 at Haulover Marina when two women tried to board a boat. He said while he was telling the women to get off the boat, an argument broke out between employees and the group the women were with, which included Hill.

A man believed to be Hill slapped the worker on the back of the neck. Police said the man was pushed away from the worker before charging at the worker and having to be restrained.

Police said the incident was captured by surveillance cameras, but the video has not been released.

Will Tyreek Hill be suspended?

That's up to the Dolphins and the NFL. The team said it would wait while the investigation played out to make a decision.

"We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with Tyreek, his representatives and the NFL," the Dolphins said June 21. "We will reserve further comment at this time."

Dolphins training camp begins July 30. As things stand, Hill is expected to attend as expected.

Did Tyreek Hill get charged?

Currently there are no charges filed against Hill. The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office said it was reviewing evidence in the case.

A potential suspension does not hinge on criminal charges, however. The NFL's code of conduct policy states "even if the conduct does not result in a criminal conviction," players found to have engaged in certain activities will be subject to punishment by the league. Among those actions include "actual or threatened physical violence" and "assault and/or battery."

What is Tyreek Hill's history with violence charges?

Hill was dismissed from the Oklahoma State football and track teams after he was arrested on domestic assault and battery charges in December 2014. Crystal Espinal, who was pregnant with Hill's child, said he choked her and punched her in the stomach and face. Hill initially pleaded not guilty before changing to a guilty plea and eventually reaching a plea deal to serve three years' probation.

In April 2019, while he was with the Kansas City Chiefs, Hill was investigated for battery after their son, now 3, suffered a broken arm. Hill and Espinal, now his fiancée, temporarily lost custody of the child, but Kansas City police said they would not press child abuse charges.

A day later, a Kansas City TV station released audio of a conversation between Hill and Espinal in which they talked about what happened to their son. The audio led the NFL to announce an indefinite suspension the following day.

In July, the NFL said it concluded its investigation and said Hill would not be suspended for any games.
