Is Travis Kelce the best tight end to ever play in the NFL? Greg Olsen weighs in
When asked about Travis Kelce’s place in tight end lore, Greg Olsen, a three-time Pro Bowler at the position, and creator of Tight End University stated his opinion succinctly and emphatically.
“He’s on the Mount Rushmore for sure,” said Olsen to USA TODAY Sports’ Mackenzie Salmon on a recent episode of Sports Seriously.
Kelce’s resume is already Hall of Fame worthy: two Super Bowl wins, four times a First-team All-Pro, eight Pro Bowls, and a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
“I think (in) another couple of years of the production that he’s had over these last seven or eight (years), we could be having the conversation that Travis sits atop that whole list.”
The stats back up Olsen’s assertion.
Tony Gonzalez is widely considered the benchmark for tight ends. The former Chief leads the current Chief by roughly 5000 yards and 42 receiving TDs. However, Gonzalez has played in 126 more games than Kelce.
With Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball for KC, his favorite target, Kelce, who’s 33 years old, seems destined to surpass the numbers Gonzalez posted over his stellar 17-season career.
