Tracking Louisiana football's undrafted free agents after 2023 NFL Draft

The 2023 NFL Draft has come and gone.

Louisiana football player Andre Jones was selected in the seventh round by the Washington Commanders over the course of the three-day event from Kansas City, making it four straight years the Ragin' Cajuns had at least one player drafted.

But for some former Cajuns, they didn't hear their name called.

But their pursuit of making it in the league isn't over as NFL teams will pick up some former UL players on undrafted free agents following the conclusion of the draft.

Here are the signings, updated as they are reported:

Johnny Lumpkin, TE, New England Patriots

Former Louisiana tight end Johnny Lumpkin signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New England Patriots, UL announced on its Twitter page.

Lumpkin had a eye-popping Pro Day workout, highlighted by a 4.64 40-yard dash and 33-inch vertical while measuring in at 6-5, 264 pounds, but it wasn't quite enough to get his name called. He finished his UL career with 36 catches for 408 yards and six touchdowns.

Chris Smith, RB, Seattle Seahawks

Former Ragin' Cajuns tailback Chris Smith is signing an undrafted free agent deal with the Seattle Seahawks, per reports.

The deal includes a $6,500 signing bonus. Smith is a versatile back that possesses plenty of skill in the run and passing game. But his most attractive trait to NFL teams, due to this smaller frame (5-9, 200) is his return game ability.

He finished with 2,167 rushing yards, 410 receiving yards as well as 1,556 kickoff return yards along with 21 career TDs.

John Stephens Jr., WR, Dallas Cowboys

Former Louisiana receiver John Stephens Jr. has signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

Stephens' stats from the season won't wow you (14 receptions, 284 yards, three touchdowns), but he nailed his UL Pro Day workout in front of scouts, impressing plenty of them with a session that featured him with 20 reps on bench, a 36-inch vertical and a 4.63 40 at 6-4, 232 pounds.
