Track Conference Championships: Orrville boys runner-up in PAC

Four event victories paced Orrville’s boys track team to a runner-up finish Thursday at the Principals Athletic Conference Championships.

Led by two wins from thrower Talon Beichler and first-place finishes by Caden Race and Owen Lacy, the Red Riders compiled 137 points to finish off the pace of CVCA (144). Tuslaw (50) tied for fifth with Canton South and Triway (43) took seventh.

Beichler, an All-Ohioan last season, took top honors in the shot put with a mark of 58-feet-11, followed by a throw of 139-4 for the win in the discus, while Race also won in the field after clearing 12-6 in the pole vault.

Lacy had a strong day on the track, highlighted by a victory in the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 13.74 seconds. The sophomore also was second in the 1,600 (4:36.40) and helped Orrville’s 4x800 place third.

The Riders also picked up points with runner-up finishes by Daniel Comito in the 800 (2:00.37) and Bronson Rogers in the 300 hurdles (43.04). Comito missed out on the league title by 0.32 seconds to CVCA’s Gavin Johnson, while Rogers placed ahead of teammate Gavin Belding. Both Orrville’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay units were second.

Tuslaw sprinter Manny Strong walked away with three individual medals, placing runner-up in the 200 and 400, along with a third-place run in the 100. Strong came oh-so-close in both of his second-place finishes, missing the 200 title by 0.05 and finishing 0.01 behind Northwest’s Dylan Easterling.

Kaden Lawson also picked up points for the Mustangs, taking third in the pole vault.

Like the boys meet, the girls title also went to CVCA with 190 points. Tuslaw was third with 89, followed by Orrville in fifth (72) and Triway in sixth (69).

The area had two wins as the Titans’ 4x200 of Zoey Baker, Addison Hudson, Cierra Kemery, and Ava Gaffey combined to take first in 1:52.13 — beating the Mustangs (1:53.30) — while Orrville’s Catrina Race and Chloe Albrecht went 1-2 in the pole vault. Race cleared 9-6 for the victory.

Tuslaw used its depth for a top-three team finish overall with four second-place finishes. Ashley Eberhardt was runner-up in the 800 (2:29.24), while teammate Paige Marthey had a similar finish in the 300 hurdles (49.95). The 4x400 unit also was second, along with the 4x200.

Kemary and Gaffey also had success as individuals for Triway, Kemary taking second in the 100 (13.52) and Gaffey doing the same in the 200 (28.79).

Ohio Cardinal Conference Championships

A week ago, West Holmes’ Grant Miller registered a personal-record throw in the shot put.

The West Holmes senior added another career-best mark Friday night, this time to win the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship in the event at the annual league meet in Ashland.

Miller reset his personal-best distance twice during competition, once in the preliminary round, and then again on his second-to-last throw of finals — a toss of 47-feet-1½ — to come from behind to win the event. Despite a 46-6 earlier in the day, Miller trailed teammate Jack Marmet by a half-inch heading into the finals. The veteran then followed up two fouls with the eventual winning mark. Marmet was runner-up with a 46-6½.

The Knights also picked up a win in the high jump by Kyle Maltarich to finish in a tie for fifth overall in the team standings. Lexington captured the boys title with 162.5 points. Maltarich cleared 6-4 to take the high jump, an event that he earned All-Ohio status in last season.

Wooster, which was seventh in the team standings, picked up a runner-up finish in the 4x800. The unit of Jack Frichtl, Oliver Miller, Talen Keys, and Jackson Stansifer combined to clock an 8:14.41 to finish behind New Philadelphia (8:04.80).

Tristen Middaugh of West Holmes also was third in the pole vault, clearing 12-3.

On the girls side, the Knights had two event victories in the distance events to earn a fifth-place finish as a team. The 4x800 of Katherine Kaster, Zora Starner, Lexy Starner and Noelle Smith ran a season-best 9:55.57 to win convincingly over Ashland (10:09.47) — a time nearly four seconds faster than their previous-best mark.

Smith added an individual win later in the meet, clocking a 12:03.33 to take top honors in the 3,200.

Grace Kostohryz had a first-place finish for Wooster in the shot put, while Avery Hamilton-Topovski (long jump) and Abi Strand-Fox (400) each were second.

Kostohryz, a senior, threw the shot 36-6 for her win, registering the winning mark in two of her final three attempts on the day. Both Hamilton-Topovski and Strand-Fox had career days in their respective second-place finishes — Hamilton-Topovski clearing 16-feet and Strand-Fox clocking a 1:01.83.
