Tournament runs end for Bolles, Nease doubles pairs in 2023 FHSAA state tennis finals

Deep runs for Bolles and Nease in the Florida High School Athletic Association state tennis championships ended in Friday's rain-delayed tournament conclusion in Central Florida.

The Nease girls doubles team of Kylie Kochis and Blair Murray advanced to the Class 4A individual final before losing to Patricia Palencia and Payton Seidle-Lubowitz of Doral Academy, 7-5, 6-2.

Kochis and Murray, the top seeds, had won their early round matches in straight sets. Kochis had previously reached the individual tournament final in singles, but lost late Thursday to Alyssa Novoa of Apopka, 6-2, 6-1.

In Class 2A, the Bolles girls individual doubles pair of Katrina Kirov and Rafael Neel lost 8-3 to Jacklyn Daynovski and Kristina Despotuli of Delray Beach American Heritage in the ghost bracket final, the last stage before the overall doubles final.

The Bolles girls ended as Class 2A team runners-up, falling 4-1 to Gulliver Prep in the championship after earlier overcoming South Walton and Lake Highland Prep. The pair of Kirov and Neel scored the lone Bulldogs point in the final.

For Northeast Florida girls tennis, the wait goes on: No area school has won the team title since Bolles at Class 2A in 2012, and the region's last girls doubles champion pair in FHSAA state records was Bolles' Lori Smith and Lori Ann Freedman in 1989.

In the Class 2A boys team tournament, Bolles lost its semifinal 4-1 to Satellite. Creekside's Aryan Gupta earlier lost in the quarterfinal stage of Class 4A boys individual singles, and the Knights' pair of Gupta and Jack Walzer lost in the second round of individual doubles. Stanton's girls doubles pair of Katie Wong and Emma Ferguson was eliminated in the semifinals of the Class 2A individual tournament, while Wong advanced to the singles semifinals before a straight-sets loss to eventual winner Juhnyee See of Coral Springs Charter.
