Touchdown Wire names Giants’ Daniel Jones a QB who ‘must improve’
The New York Giants have had a rough past five seasons, failing to win over six games in each of them. Many believe that this all starts at the quarterback play. And while a plethora of issues have plagued these Giants’ teams, the quarterback position has been a significant issue since their last playoff birth in the 2016 NFL season.
Daniel Jones is now in the last year of his rookie contract and if he does not help the Giants win games he will likely see 2022 as his final season as a member of the team.
The former sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft has had a lackluster start to his career and the Giants need more out of him if they want to get in the win column again. This is why Touchdown Wire named Jones a quarterback who “must improve” this season.
If their offense goes deep, it will likely be from no-huddle shotgun where their receivers are against press coverage. A modernized air-raid offense with shallow crossers will uncover one-on-one matchups deep. This pair perfectly with Jones’ skillset and the talent surrounding him.
Daboll knows that his rookie left tackle in Evan Neal, isn’t going to be a savior for Jones’, but his quarterback still has viable weapons in Sterling Shepard, Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and rookie Wan’Dale Robinson. All Jones has to do is protect the football by getting the ball out quick to his playmakers and he has a chance to see the 2023 season in a Big Blue uniform.
Jones has definitely shown a lot of potential for success with his amazing deep ball ability and rushing versatility. However, the main issue that Jones has had coming into the league is his turnovers as he has had 49 turnovers in just 38 games. This is not a great recipe for winning but the blame can not be all placed on Jones.
The Duke alum has had to deal with a barrage of issues since coming into the league. Whether it is his abysmal offensive line play (has been sacked 105 times), a slew of untimely injuries (New York was the second most injured team in 2021), or drops from his receivers (29 drops from Giants receivers ranked as the second-highest on-target passes dropped) Jones has had to deal with a lot of problems over the past three seasons.
However, the Giants have put Jones in a position to succeed in 2022 as they have revamped the offensive line, appear to have a healthy receiving core, and have also given him a better offensive coaching staff with Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka. With the combination of these improvements, Jones will be expected to improve in 2022 and if he does not it will likely be his last season as a member of the Giants.
