Here are the top Spartanburg area high school football quarterbacks in the 2023 season

With the South Carolina high school football season inching closer each day, here's a look at the Spartanburg area's top quarterbacks to keep your eye on for the 2023 season.

Kamajay Brackett-Brannon

Broome | Senior

As part of one of the most dynamic backfield duos in the area alongside his cousin, Centurions running back Jaylen McGill, Brackett-Brannon accounted for 21 total touchdowns last season while throwing for 1,517 yards on 91-for-173 passing and rushing for 976 yards on 121 carries — 8.1 yards per carry.

Broome played Chapman in high school football at Broome High School on Oct. 28, 2022. Chapman's Coleman Gray (5) QB on a passing play.

Coleman Gray

Chapman | Senior

Gray accounted for 28 total touchdowns, threw for 1,727 yards on 119-for-197 passing, and rushed for 588 yards on 126 carries. The senior quarterback's performance last season makes him the most accomplished and complete returner at the position in 2023.

Lincoln Huskey

Boiling Springs | Junior

After a rocky first year starting for a rebuilding Boiling Springs team in which he passed for 1,135 yards, accounted for 11 total touchdowns and rushed for 257 yards, expect Huskey to take a step up and turn those positive flashes into consistent play and the QB spot this season for second-year coach Matt Reel.

Tamijai Johnson

Spartanburg | Junior

In appearances last season in relief for now East Carolina QB Raheim Jeter, we were able to see what was up next for the Vikings and coach Mark Hodge's superb lineage of quarterbacks in Tamijai Johnson. He threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns on 20-for-32 passing while rushing for 110 yards on 20 carries.

KJay Proctor

Chesnee | Junior

In a new scheme that should put Proctor even more at the center of the Eagles' offense, expect him to improve on his sophomore season in which he threw for 872 yards on 70-for-133 passing, rushed for 241 yards and scored 12 TDs.

David Sorensen

Dorman | Senior

Sorensen made a name for himself after his lone start at QB last season against Clover in the first round of the playoffs, throwing for 93 yards on 6-for-8 passing, and producing four touchdowns — one passing, three rushing — to lead Dorman to a blowout 37-7 win. Expect Sorensen to be the starter for the Cavaliers this season for new coach Jake Morris.

Riley Staton

Gaffney | Senior

After transferring to Greenville High from Gray Collegiate in January, Staton -- who has offers from Limestone and Catawba -- made the move to Cherokee County powerhouse Gaffney after spring ball. He replaces now Duke quarterback Grayson Loftis. Staton was a dynamic passer for Gray last season, throwing for 2,126 yards and 24 touchdowns on 140-for-223 passing.

Andrew Stevens

Byrnes | Senior

With a litany of weapons in the backfield and on the outside, whoever is lining up under center for Byrnes is bound to do well at the helm of the high-powered offense. Stevens, who showed some flashes last season while throwing for 291 yards and four TDs on 26-for-34 passing, seems to be the next Rebels starting quarterback.
