Top Somerset County baseball, softball, tennis, track and field performers April 29-May 7

Athlete of the Week

Meyersdale junior softball player Izabella Donaldson was voted Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while Somerset senior baseball player Owen Miller was selected Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts April 23-28.

In two games, Donaldson tallied three hits, including two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored. She allowed one run on four hits, one walk and struck out 13 in a win over Berlin.

Meanwhile, in a triumph over Penn Cambria, Miller delivered four hits, including two doubles, six RBIs and two runs scored.

Baseball

Blacklick Valley 20, Turkeyfoot 1 (4): Zack Ryan plated Gavin Culp for the lone run of the game for the Rams in a lopsided setback to the Vikings at Sargent's Stadium at the Point.

Baseball

Tussey Mountain 5, Windber 4: The Titans rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning to knock off the Ramblers.

Lucas Rummel recorded two RBIs while Rex Rininger added two hits and a run scored for Windber.

Friday

Baseball

Berlin Brothersvalley 9, Shanksville-Stonycreek 3: Parker Black tallied two hits and scored two runs to lead the Mountaineers past the Vikings at Iron Horse Sports Complex.

Black pitched five innings and earned the win. Craig Jarvis provided two hits and two runs.

Alec Thiele doubled and scored a run for Shanksville. Grant Boozer struck out nine over six innings.

Rockwood 4, Ferndale 2: In Johnstown, Johnathan Felesky provided a hit, an RBI and two runs scored as the Rockets doubled up the Yellow Jackets.

Hunter Whipkey added a hit, an RBI and a run for Rockwood. Luke Beahr allowed two runs on three hits, one walk and struck out six in 4 ⅔ innings.

Somerset 12, Bishop Guilfoyle 2 (5): In Somerset, Callen Miller recorded three hits, including a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored as the Golden Eagles hammered the Marauders.

Brad Bruner homered and scored four runs while Kahne Foltz added two hits for Somerset. Aiden VanLenten allowed two unearned runs on one hit, one walk and struck out three in five innings.

Conemaugh Township 12, Cambria Heights 2: In Patton, Luke Haight, Zack Petree, Luke Weber and Tyler Weber each drove in two runs to lift Conemaugh Township over Cambria Heights.

Luke Weber, Tyler Weber, Tanner Shirley and Aiden Prior had two hits apiece. Tyler Weber allowed two earned runs on four hits, five walks and struck out eight over 5 ⅔ innings.

North Star 9, Blacklick Valley 2: In Ferrellton, Connor Yoder produced three hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to lift the Cougars over the Vikings.

Parker Scherer tallied two hits and drove in three runs while Vance Kimmel added a hit and two RBIs for North Star. Glendon Griffith allowed no runs, two hits, one walk and struck out five over six innings.

Softball

North Star 6, Blacklick Valley 4: In Ferrellton, Ariana Speigle produced two hits, two RBIs and a run scored as the Cougars edged the Vikings.

Ryleigh Grove delivered two hits, an RBI and two runs scored for North Star. Kyra Turner and Grace Metz combined for eight strikeouts. Metz tossed three innings of no-hit ball.

Track and field

Altoona Mountain Lion Track and Field Classic

Conemaugh Township senior Ethan Black won the Class 2A title in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.38. He broke the previous record that stood for 17 years. Black also captured the title in the 200 dash and was a member of the winning 400 relay with Garrett Tunstall, Cameron Dunn and Jon Updyke, breaking an 11-year record with a time of 43.52.

Black was selected the Coach Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer Award winner in the 2A boys' competition.

Windber senior Blake Klosky won the shot put.

Somerset senior Sydney Rush, a Saint Francis University signee, outlasted Conemaugh Township sophomore Izzy Slezak in the 100-meter dash, setting a new meet record with a time of 12.28. Rush also captured the crown in the long jump and was a member of the winning 400 relay team alongside Josie Smith, Kamryn Ross and Abby Urban.

Slezak won the 200 dash.

Thursday

Baseball

North Star 10, Conemaugh Township 3 (8): In Davidsville, the Cougars tallied two runs in the top of the seventh then erupted for seven runs in the eighth to capture an important WestPAC North victory.

Connor Yoder recorded two hits and two RBIs for North Star. Cayden Turner contributed three hits, an RBI and two runs scored while Glendon Griffth and Vance Kimmel each provided two RBIs. Griffith got the win in relief of Turner, throwing two innings on 1-hit ball.

Tanner Shirley had four hits and an RBI for Conemaugh Township. Colin Dinyar allowed three unearned runs on three hits, four walks and struck out 10 in 6 ⅔ innings.

Softball

Rockwood 12, Blacklick Valley 11: In Rockwood, the Rockets outslugged the Vikings.

No stats were provided.

Turkeyfoot 26, Salisbury-Elk Lick 7 (4): Brooke Snyder produced three hits, including a grand slam, six RBIs and five runs scored as the Rams romped the Elks.

Jayna Nieves contributed five RBIs and two runs while Trinity Hyatt added two hits, three RBIs and four runs for Turkeyfoot. Makiah Schartiger chipped in two hits and two RBIs.

Sidney Hutzel drove in two runs for Salisbury.

Tennis

Somerset 4, Tussey Mountain 1: Liam Egal and Giuseppe Castonovo earned singles wins for the Golden Eagles in a triumph over the Titans.

Josiah Antram and Ben Witt along with the team of Mason Chabol and Tanner Wassilchalk picked up victories in doubles.

Baseball

Tyrone 5, Somerset 2: In Somerset, Tyrone broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to knock off Somerset in a non-conference matchup.

Zane Hagans tallied two hits and an RBI for Somerset. Hunter Krotzer allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits, three walks and struck out four over five innings.
