Top performers from South Jersey baseball from second week of May

Here are some of the top performers on diamonds across our seven-county coverage area in South Jersey.

Burlington County Scholastic League

Chad Brewer, Burlington Township. The junior tossed six shutout inning with eight strikeouts en route to the win in a 1-0 win over Northern Burlington on May 6. Five days later, the Greyhounds picked up a 5-3 victory against Cinnaminson to clinch the Liberty Division title.

Adrian Capellan, Pennsauken. The junior went 3-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs as Pennsauken clinched a share of the Burlington County Scholastic League title last week. He had a hit, run and a stolen base in a title-clinching 4-3 win over Bordentown. He leads the club with a .571 batting average and 20 hits.

Jacob Loughry, Riverside. The freshman achieved perfection in his first varsity start on May 8. Loughry retired all 15 batters he faced in a 14-0 win over Willingboro on May 8 at Bob Kenney Field. He struck out six and needed just 55 pitches to finish off the perfecto.

Colonial Conference

Charlie Copsetta, Audubon. The senior drove in eight runs as the Green Wave picked up three more conference wins last week. Copsetta slugged his first scholastic home run and drove in six runs in a win over Paulsboro on May 7. He finished 4-for-11 with five runs scored during the stretch, lifting his season average over .300.

Anthony Gogolski, Sterling. The junior tossed five shutout frames in a 10-0 win over West Deptford. He yielded two hits and struck out seven en route to his first victory of the season.

Kirby Rice, Haddon Township. The Hawks closed out the week with a three-game winning streak and the sophomore provided plenty of production during the stretch. Rice cooked up six hits and six RBIs during the streak. He’s has a knock in six consecutive games, raising his season average to .458.

Olympic Conference

Ryder Garino, Cherry Hill West. The senior right-hander delivered an absolute gem in the Diamond Classic semifinal round. He shut down top-ranked and top-seeded Gloucester Catholic with seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Garino improved to 6-0 and boasts a 0.40 ERA  (two earned runs in 35 1/3 innings) and 61 strikeouts as he continues to establish himself as one of the top pitchers in the Garden State.

Dillon Haddock, Cherry Hill East. The Cougars went 4-1 on the week, including a second-place finish at Woodstown’s Lee Ware Tournament, and the freshman had a knock in all five games. He went 8-for-14 (.571) with five RBIs and six runs scored. Haddock is hitting .364 with a team-best 20 knocks for East.

Landon Mack, Bishop Eustace. The senior batted .333 (5-for-15) with four runs scored and three RBIs as the Crusaders went 4-0 for the week. Mack has collected a knock in his last six games and eight of his last nine while leading the club with 25 hits and batting .385.

Tri-County Conference

Tommy Formisano, Highland. The Tartans rattled off a season-best three-game winning streak and Formisano played a huge role in the success. The senior went 6-for-8 (.750) with four RBIs, four runs scored and four stolen bases. He went 3-for-3 with a double and two stolen bases in a 10-0 win over rival Triton on May 8. The hot streak pushed his season average north of .400.

Zach Maxwell, Delsea. The senior had a week to remember. Along with joining the 100-career hit club, Maxwell scored the walk-off run against Washington Township in the Diamond Classic quarterfinal on May 8. Three days later, his 101st career knock was the walk-off winner in a 1-0 victory over Northern Burlington to seal the Crusaders’ return trip to the Diamond Classic championship game. Maxwell went 7-for-13 for the week, lifting his season batting average to .484.

Pat Yurgin, Clearview. The sophomore drove in seven runs as the Pioneers picked up a pair of wins over Williamstown and Pennsville to close out the week. Yurgin went 4-for-5 with a career-best five RBIs in the victory over Williamstown. The run-producing outburst gave Yurgin the team lead with 23 RBIs.

Cape-Atlantic League

Matt DiCave, Lower Cape May. In back-to-back wins over Mainland and Hammonton, the junior went 6-for-7 with six RBIs and three runs scored. The offensive outburst pushed his season batting average to .370.

Kevin Dick, Millville. As the Thunderbolts produced a season-best four-game winning streak, the junior had at least one knock and one RBI in each of the victories. He hit .600 (6-for-10) with five RBIs and four runs scored over the stretch. In a 7-2 win over Buena on May 7, Dick had three hits, including a homer.

Troy Sabott, Egg Harbor Township. The senior tossed two complete games in impressive wins over Ocean City and Middle Township. On May 6, he fanned seven en route to a four-hitter in a 5-1 victory against OC. Five days later, Sabott twirled an even better gem, striking out 11 and allowing three hits, no walks and no earned runs, in a nine-inning 2-1 win against Middle Township. He needed just 90 pitches to navigate his way through nine innings.
