Top performers: Saint James softball team wins first area tournament since 2010

Here’s a list of some of the Montgomery-area high schools’ top performers from events played May 1-6.

Boys soccer

Monday 

Prattville Christian’s Cade Segars scored three goals in a 4-2 playoff win against Alabama Christian.

Friday

Montgomery Academy's Lucas Rizzo scored four goals in a 6-2 playoff victory over Theodore.

Montgomery Academy's Brewer Welch scored two goals in the win over Theodore.

Girls soccer

Tuesday

Saint James Katie Brightwell scored four goals in an 8-0 playoff win against Prattville Christian.

Softball

Tuesday

Brantley’s Anna Free hit a solo home run and pitched nine strikeouts in a 22-0 victory over Georgiana.

Brantley’s Kaylee Navarre had 11 strikeouts in an 11-0 victory over Red level.

Prattville Christian’s Lara Beth and Kandice Crosby combined to pitch a perfect game in a 15-0 victory over Dallas County.

Opps' Caroline Courson hit a two-run home run and three RBIs in an 11-1 victory over Pike County.

Saint James' Sydney Johnston had three RBIs in a 10-0 victory over Alabama Christian.

Boys and girls golf

Monday

Montgomery Academy varsity boys golf team finished second out of eight teams in Sectionals and will advance to Sub-state on May 8. Joe Drumwright shot a 90 and advanced individually.

Trinity’s Whit Bixenman shot a 78 to capture low medalist honors and lead the boys' team to the 3A Section 2 championship.

Trinity’s Eden Pendleton shot an 80 and Virginia Anne Holmes shot an 81 to help Trinity win the 4A-5A Section 1 golf championship.

Track and field

Auburn senior Maxwell Hardin won the Class 7A boys 3,200 meters and clocked 9:11.55 to set a new 7A state meet record.

Auburn’s Patrick Sweeney won the Class 4A boys’ discus with a heave of 64 feet, 7 inches.

Montgomery Academy's Grant Casey won the 3200 meter 4A state championship with a time of 9.35.

Montgomery Academy's Isabella Johnson won the 4A state championship in shot put.

Saint James' Connor Owens won the 1A-3A state championship in discus.

Equestrian

Saint James Josephine Foshee was named the 2023 IEA national champion after winning the USHJA Varsity Intermediate Equitation Over Fences 2’ at the national finals.
