Top performances by South Jersey wrestlers during second week of January

Each week we will feature some of the top performances by South Jersey wrestlers in our seven-county coverage area.

Burlington County League

Patrick Daly, Palmyra. Powering the Pals to four wins last week, the senior delivered four first-period pins. Daly has notched nine wins in his last 10 bouts, including eight by fall.

Hayden Joyce, Northern Burlington. The junior 150-pounder produced four pins, including a 14-second fall, as the Greyhounds extended their winning streak to five. Joyce is 11-1 in his last 12 bouts since Dec. 27.

Amari Martinez, Pennsauken. Code Red was in full effect last week and Martinez was a big reason. The junior 144-pounder went 4-0 with four pins as Pennsauken swept a four-meet week. Martinez locked up a 36-33 victory over Deptford with a second-period fall. He’s 9-3 with six straight wins.

Colonial Conference

Josh DelGozzo, Haddon Heights. The senior picked up a pair of pins against rival Haddon Township and Clayton/Glassboro last week, extending his unbeaten streak to six in January. The Coast Guard-bound DelGozo owns 10 wins this season.

Roland Fricke, Haddonfield. The senior produced two pins and a major decision as the Haddons knocked off Cinnaminson, Pemberton and previously unbeaten Seneca on Saturday. The 175-pounder is 8-0 with four pins in January.

Andrew Tighe, West Deptford. The senior went 4-0 helping the Eagles captured the TowneBank US American Division championship at the 43rd annual Virginia Duals over the weekend. Tighe had two pins and a pair of two-point decisions, including a 4-2 victory in the title meet that clinched a 34-30 triumph over Great Bridge. He improved to 18-2 on the season.

Olympic Conference

Jay Campbell, Lenape. The junior remained unbeaten in 2024, rattling off four wins last week and extending his winning streak to seven. Campbell recorded a 9-5 decision over Rancocas Valley’s Ismael Maldonado, who was ranked No. 3 in South Jersey at 126. Campbell is 15-3 on the season.

Lucas Estevez, Shawnee. The junior 157-pounder recorded three pins as Shawnee knocked off Eastern, Camden and Cherry Hill West. He’s won five of his last six bouts at 157 pounds.

Cole Pettet, Eastern. The junior maintained his winning ways, picking up five victories last week at 144, including two pins, a technical fall and a major decision. Since the calendar flipped to January, Pettet is 9-0

Tri-County Conference

Drew Ford, Deptford. The senior 175-pounder earned a 2-1 decision over Pennsauken’s Kaleb Rodriguez and delivered three more wins, including two by fall, as the Spartans swept a quad meet on Saturday against Penns Grove, New Egypt and St. Joseph Academy. Ford is 7-0 in January.

Michael Rosano, Overbrook. The junior 132-pounder remained unbeaten in 2024, extending his winning streak to seven in the new calendar year. Rosano picked up four wins last week with a pin, a technical fall and two decisions. He’s 14-2 on the season.

Mikey Williams, Highland/Triton. The senior 144-pounder became the 21st wrestler in Highland history to join the 100-career win club. Williams notched the milestone victory with a 9-1 major decision over Clearview’s Stephen Borrelli. Williams is riding a 15-bout winning streak and is the top-ranked wrestler in South Jersey for his weight class.

Cape-Atlantic League

Xavier McBride, Millville. The junior 190-pounder rattled off six straight wins to start the season. Three of his wins were by fall and a pair of sudden victories over Washington Township’s Gabe Palaganas and Pennsville’s Elisa Lussi.

Tyler Thomas, Egg Harbor Township. The senior 126-pounder delivered a pin at the Eagles knocked off rival Absegami, 46-36, and a 17-8 major decision in a 44-30 triumph over Millville. A champ at EHT’s Marinelli Tournament, Thomas has won 12 bouts in a row and is 15-1 for the season.

Ed Vincent, St. Augustine. The senior 215-pounder went 4-0 as the Hermits won three times en route to a ninth-place finish in the American Division of the 43rd annual Virginia Duals. Vincent recorded three pins and accepted a forfeit. Vincent owns nine wins this season, including seven by fall.

Milestone: Lower Cape May’s Billy Damiana earned his 100th career win as Caper Tigers’ head coach on Saturday. He also won a school-record 137 times during his scholastic days at LCM when he was a two-time district champ and a two-time state place winner.

Girls

Shea Aretz, Buena. Fresh off a title at the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame tournament, the sophomore was a runner-up at the 5th annual BCWCA Invitational at Elwood Park. Aretz placed second at 134, winning her first three bouts by fall before losing in the title bout to defending state champion Kayla Vazquez, of Kinnelon.

Kloi Tighe, Gloucester. The junior saw her first action of 2024 and produced a second-place finish at the 5th annual BCWCA Invitational. She earned three pins on her way to the title bout at 107 where she suffered a 10-0 loss to defending state champion Leeana Mercado, of Lodi.

Shaelie Young, Gateway/Woodbury. The junior rallied from the third seed to capture the 187 title at the 5th annual BCWCA Invitational. Young recorded three pins on her way to the title. She improved to 23-1 on the season with 22 wins by fall.
