Tony’s Take: Thoughts on Colorado’s first depth chart

The Colorado Buffaloes have released their initial depth chart for their week 1 matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs. The depth chart will change as the season moves on with young players elevating themselves and injuries testing Colorado’s newfound depth.

Here are some notes from the Week 1 depth chart:

Offense:

  • No answers yet at the QB1 position with Brendon Lewis and JT Shrout

  • “Or” groupings also stand out at center and left guard. The battle at center is still underway between Noah Fenske and Austin Johnson. Both may end up starting, though, with Tommy Brown being limited this preseason with an injury

  • I couldn’t be happier for Maurice Bell as he is a starter at the slot receiver position after battling injuries in past seasons. Bell has had an outstanding camp and looks poised to contribute in a big way this season

  • A few different running backs could play on Friday because Deion Smith and Alex Fontenot are listed as co-starters. Jayle Stack and Charlie Offerdahl are also listed as co-backups

Defense:

  • The defensive line is experienced and different players are going to come in waves. Justin Jackson also had a great offseason and has risen up the depth chart

  • Both Guy Thomas and Jamar Montgomery are listed as co-starters at the edge position

  • Marvin Ham has made a name for himself and is listed as the starter at the Sam LB position, pushing Josh Chandler-Semedo and Quinn Perry to co-starters at the Mike position

  • As expected, the Buffs are relying on a lot of youth in the secondary, with eight of the ten No. 1 or No. 2 players being freshmen or sophomores

Special Teams:

  • No real surprises here. The Buffaloes were set at kicker (Cole Becker), punter (Ashton Logan) and both return spots (Nikko Reed and Chase Penry)
