Todd Gurley tallies 208 rushing yards on career day in win vs. Broncos

Todd Gurley’s monster season keeps getting better.

The Los Angeles Rams running back posted a career-high rushing day Sunday at the expense of the Denver Broncos and their once-vaunted defense with 208 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in a 23-20 win.

Todd Gurley joins Marshall Faul in Rams lore

He joins Rams royalty, becoming the first player on the franchise to eclipse 200 yards on the ground since Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk in 2001.

“Man, O-line, tight ends, quarterback, everybody did a great job of just opening the holes, and [I] took care of the rest,” Gurley told reporters. “Just thank God we came here in a tough environment and got the win, and you know, it felt good, but credit to those big boys up front.”

On the season, Gurley has tallied 623 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground as the Rams are off to a 6-0 start. He’s added 21 catches for 247 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air.

Gurley powers Rams in cold-weather grind

The Rams leaned on Gurley on a bitterly cold day in Denver that saw temperatures in the low 20s. The passing attack that’s thrived this season behind an emerging Jared Goff struggled to find its stride as the Broncos tallied five sacks and held L.A. to 174 net passing yards.

It speaks to the effectiveness of a dangerous Rams offense that can afford a bad day in one element of the game and still produce enough to win.

Head coach Sean McVay’s confidence in Gurley paid off on a fourth-and-one gamble at the Broncos 10-yard-line in the second quarter. Instead of a chip-shot field goal attempt, the Rams drew up a run for Gurley, who not only got the first down, but ran to the left edge and found the end zone.

The Rams were able to control the clock, holding a 10-minute edge in time of possession thanks in large part to feeding the ball to Gurley.

With a dynamic, progressive coach in McVay surrounded with so much talent in Los Angeles, it’s hard to imagine how defenses will figure out this unit.
