Tioga repeats as dual meet champ; CVA beaten in tournament semifinal

SYRACUSE - Central Valley Academy wrestlers came within one bout of a return to the Division II final at the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championship Saturday.

The Thunder won twice in pool competition at SRC Arena and met John Glenn High School from Section XI in the semifinals.

John Glenn, located in Elwood on Long Island, was beaten 56-12 in the championship round by Tioga, the No. 1 seed from Section IV and now winner of three consecutive championships.

"At the end of the day, we're top four in the state," said Central Valley Academy coach Bob Bush whose team was the runner-up to Tioga last year. "We had to battle all day."

Section V's Palmyra-Macedon joined Tioga, John Glenn and Central Valley Academy in the semifinals after each of those teams emerged from its three-team pool earlier in the day. Tioga was 51-24 winner in its semifinal then turned its attention to the other mat where Central Valley Academy and John Glenn were tied at 30 with one bout remaining.

Starting at 124 pounds, Central Valley Academy lost the first match then won five in a row and led 24-6 through a forfeit at 160. Two decisions and a first period pin pulled John Glenn within six points at 24-18 before Central Valley Academy's Jeremy McRedmond pinned his 285-pound opponent in the second period and extended the Thunder's lead to 30-18 heading into the last three matches at the lightest weights.

Ashton Presti and Tommy Aiello pinned their opponents at 101 and 108 pounds, tying the score at 30 with the 116-pounders remaining. David Futeran scored a technical fall at 3:35, earning John Glenn a 35-30 victory.

Central Valley Academy (27-2) had four consecutive tournament duals decided by the final bout, and the Thunder had only previously been beat at the Mountain Duals by Shoreham-Wading River, the team John Glenn had beaten to earn its spot in the state tournament. The Thunder defeated Jordan-Elbridge 39-33 on a McRedmond pin in what turned out to be the final match of the Section III tournament. In Saturday's D Pool, Central Valley Academy beat Sleepy Hollow 36-33 with McRedmond winning a 4-0 decision in the final bout, and defeated Section XI W.T. Clarke 42-27 with Sal Fresco pinning his 215-pound opponent in the last contested bout followed by three forfeits for the final 18 points.

Santino Tubia won three matches at 138 pounds for the Thunder. McRedmond and Gene Edwards were also 3-0 with each receiving one forfeit.

Plainedge from Long Island won the Division I championship by beating Minisink Valley in its final. Section III champion Cicero-North Syracuse lost both of its duals in pool competition while Section II Saratoga Springs split its pool decisions.

Section II Cobleskill-Richmondville was 1-1 in its pool in Division II.
