Galesburg girls basketball player voted Journal Star high school athlete of the week
Kiarra Kilgore of the Galesburg girls basketball team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.
Kilgore, who earned 451 of 1,272 votes, became a record-setting Silver Streaks player last week. The senior scored 24 points this past Monday to beat Freeport, 69-45, putting her atop the program's all-time scoring list. She passed Sarah Larson (1,906 points), tallying 1,939 career points. Kilgore then scored 17 points in a 51-38 losing effort to Rock Island Alleman on Thursday. Galesburg is now 25-6 and became the 20th team that has won 25 or more games in a season.

Tyler Heffren, Eureka boys basketball
Heffren forever etched himself in the Eureka records book this past week. The senior became the Hornets' all-time leading score with 19 points in last Monday's game against Champaign St. Thomas More. He passed Jordan Prosser (1,732 points) and added 10 rebounds in a 53-46 loss. Heffren then posted another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in a 57-41 defeat to Fairbury Prairie Central on Saturday. The 6-foot-4 forward now has 1,764 career points and counting.

Hank Alvey, Illini Bluffs boys basketball
Three double-doubles last week for Alvey put him on the ballot again. He ended that three-game stretch Saturday with 26 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in beating ROWVA/Williamsfield, 61-31. In Friday's 68-41 win over Delavan, Alvey went for 23 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. The 6-foot-9 Lehigh recruit began his week last Tuesday with 33 points on 12-for-15 shooting with 16 rebounds and five blocks to beat Farmington, 62-37. IB (26-3) is now on a 14-game win streak and gave coach Clay Vass his 600th career victory.

Antaya Taylor, Manual girls basketball
Taylor added onto a milestone in wrapping up her Rams career. After she scored 1,000th career point on Feb. 3, the senior point guard scored 10 in helping Manual beat Geneseo, 44-40, last Tuesday. She then scored eight against No. 1 Peoria Notre Dame on Thursday before a 13-point effort against Tremont on Saturday. The Turks won the Class 2A Fieldcrest Regional quarterfinal meeting, 57-49, to end Taylor's season.

Gauge Shipp, Galesburg boys wrestling
Shipp swept through his second successive Class 2A sectional, winning the 132 weight class to become a three-time state qualifier. His route to the sectional crown included a quarterfinal tech fall and a major decision in the semifinals. The senior (41-0) posted a 13-4 major decision over Yorkville Christian senior Ty Edwards in the title bout. With that victory, Shipp has now won 91 matches in a row following a 50-0 state title campaign last season. That win also ties him for 11th all-time in most consecutive career matches won (91) in state history. Earlier this season, he picked up his 150th career victory.

Katelyn Marvel, Canton girls wrestling
Marvel will head to the IHSA state finals following a Geneseo Sectional championship victory on Saturday. The junior picked up a pin over Macomb junior Kelly Ladd in 4:46, capturing the 145-pound title bout in the process. Marvel (24-4) advanced through the bracket with pins in the quarterfinals (1:20) and semifinals (3:14). She now advanced to wrestle at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington on Feb. 23-24.
