Tigers of the Game: Green, Williams conclude regular season with monster performances

After a poor shooting effort in their last meeting with Tennessee, the Auburn Tigers knew that a solid offensive output would be needed in order to defeat the visiting No. 14 Volunteers on Saturday.

Auburn did just that by improving their shooting to from 24% to 49% in the rematch which was instrumental in the 79-70 win.

Four Tigers contributed heavily to their team’s offensive success. Wendell Green Jr., Johni Broome, Allen Flanigan, and Jaylin Williams combined to score 70 of Auburn’s 79 points on Saturday and combined to make 52% of their shots.

Outside of shooting, those four were assets on the defensive side of the ball as well by pulling down 18 of the team’s 29 rebounds and blocking five shots.

With so many viable candidates, it was quite difficult selecting a Tiger of the Game.

Here’s a look at who Auburn Wire writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells, as well as Auburn fans, voted for as their Tiger of the Game following Auburn’s win over Alabama.

Taylor Jones: Jaylin Williams

Jaylin Williams was one of four players to reach double-digits in points on Saturday, but it’s what he did outside of scoring that made headlines. Williams was instrumental in creating opportunites for the Tiger offense by leading the team in rebounds (8) and assists (7).

It was the sixth time that Williams led the team in rebounds, and the fifth time that he led in assists. He tied his season high in assists, and his eight rebounds ties his second-highest output of the season. He coincidentally recorded his season high nine rebounds against Tennessee one month ago.

Green was the team’s leading scorer by dropping 24 in Auburn’s  win. Green had nine points at the end of the first half after converting 3-of-4 shots from the field. He followed that up by scoring 15 more points in the second half. As a whole, Green went 8-of-14 from the field and was perfect from the free throw stripe, shooting 6-of-6.

If Wendell Green Jr. is having a great night, it usually means the entire team is as well. Saturday’s game marked the 10th time that he ended the game as the leading scorer, which extends Auburn’s record to 7-3 when Green is the leading scorer.
