Tigers agree to terms with top pick Mize
No. 1 overall draft pick Casey Mize and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms.
The Tigers announced the agreement with the right-hander shortly before a news conference at Comerica Park on Monday. Mize reportedly worked out on the field with Tigers players before attending the news conference.
According to multiple reports, Mize will receive a $7.5 million signing bonus -- less than the record $8 million Pittsburgh gave to 2011 No. 1 pick Gerrit Cole but a record for a Detroit draft pick. The Detroit Free Press was first to report the amount of the signing bonus.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Mize was the first pick in the 2018 draft after going 10-6 with a 3.30 ERA in 17 starts at Auburn in 2018. The junior struck out 156 batters and issued just 16 walks and joined former big leaguer Gregg Olson as the only two-time All-Americans in school history.
Overall, Mize was 20-13 with a 2.96 ERA and 324 strikeouts in three seasons at Auburn.
Meanwhile, Tigers third-round pick Kody Clemens announced he has signed a contract with the team.
"The decision was a lot harder than most people think, but I have decided to move forward with my baseball career and sign with the Detroit Tigers," Clemens said via his Twitter account.
Clemens, a second baseman who played at Texas, is the son of former major league pitcher Roger Clemens. He batted .351 with 24 homers and 72 RBIs this season.
