Thursday Area Roundup: See who stood out among the rest at district weightlifting meets

Here's an area roundup of basketball games from Thursday, Jan. 25.

Girls weightlifting

District 1-3A meet: Using momentum from the Navarre Invitational earlier this month, the Pace girls weightlifting team swept both the Traditional and Olympic scoring classifications at the District 1-3A meet, hosted by Niceville.

Pace scored a total of 76 points in traditional scoring, edging out second-place Navarre (65 points) and third-place Niceville (43 points). In Olympic scoring, the Patriots had 74 points, followed by Navarre (60) and Niceville (39).

Milton came in fourth place, while Tate placed sixth.

Four Patriots won their respective weight classes in both scorings, including Amaya Pablo (101 pounds), Lani Bennett (110 pounds), Shannon Bryan (139 pounds), and Ireland Grimes (169 pounds). In the 154-pound weight class, Alyssa McMurtrie won the traditional scoring, while Layah Slaughter won the Olympic scoring.

Bryan was also the district's top lifter in traditional scoring, lifting a total of 395 pounds, comprised of 150 pounds in snatch, 200 pounds in clean and jerk, and 195 pounds in bench press.

Other area weight class winners were Navarre's Izzy Zach (183 pounds) in both Olympic and traditional scoring, Milton's Dana Tolleson (199 pounds) in both Olympic and traditional, and Milton's Shyan Donaldson (unlimited) in both Olympic and traditional scoring.

District 1-2A meet: Escambia County had two weight class winners at the District 1-2A girls weightlifting meet, both from Booker T. Washington.

The Wildcats were the top area team, finishing third in traditional scoring (52 points) and Olympic scoring (51 points). Gulf Breeze came in fourth place in both scoring classifications, followed by Pine Forest in fifth. In traditional scoring, Pensacola claimed sixth and Escambia finished seventh. In Olympic scoring, Escambia earned sixth and Pensacola finished seventh.

Booker T.'s Sierra Brooks won the 154-pound weight class in both Olympic and traditional scoring. She lifted a total of 280 pounds in traditional scoring with 110 pounds in snatch, 145 pounds in clean and jerk, and 135 pounds in bench press. Adrionna Chatman won the 183-pound weight class in traditional scoring (300 pounds total) with 105 pounds in snatch, 155 pounds in clean and jerk, and 145 pounds in bench press.

Boys basketball

Pine Forest 60, Gulf Breeze 54: The Eagles have now picked up back-to-back victories, this time in a tighter match at Gulf Breeze on Thursday.

Quarter-by-quarter scores nor stats were reported.

Gulf Breeze (11-8) hosts Fort Walton Beach for a 7:30 p.m. game on Thursday. Pine Forest (12-10) travels to Fort Walton Beach Monday at 7:15 p.m.

Jay 44, Destin 38: The second-best team in District 1-1A has started to find a rhythm, with the Royals winning their last three games.

No quarter-by-quarter scores nor stats were available.

Jay (10-8) travels to Central for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.

Crestview 75, Navarre 61: The Raiders fell to a .500 record after falling on the road to the Bulldogs.

Crestview had a narrow 13-11 advantage after the first quarter, and its defense limited Navarre to just eight points in the second frame to take a sizeable 32-19 advantage into halftime.

The Raiders out-scored Crestview by a couple points in the third stanza, but couldn't muster any comeback.

Stats were not available from the game.

Navarre (11-11) hosts Milton at 7 p.m. Friday.

Laurel Hill 89, Northview 56: Laurel Hill has now swept the season series against Northview, taking the home victory on Thursday in decisive fashion.

Laurel Hill had a stronghold on the game from the start, leading 16-8 after the first quarter. Three 20-plus-point quarters for the Hoboes propelled them to victory.

No stats were provided.

Northview (3-11) goes to Destin on Friday. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Fort Walton Beach 58, Pensacola Catholic 46: The Crusaders are now on a four-game losing streak after dropping Wednesday's matchup against FWB.

The two teams were neck-and-neck through the first three quarters of the game, with the Vikings up 35-34. But FWB exploded for a 23-point fourth quarter, while limiting the Crusader offense, to secure the victory.

Solomon Sutton led the Crusaders with nine points.

Pensacola Catholic (4-18) hosts Rocky Bayou Christian on Friday at 7 p.m.

West Florida 68, Tate 61: A 10-point third quarter for Tate was the difference-maker as West Florida came out victorious.

The Aggies held a five-point lead going into halftime, before the Jaguars scored 19 in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth frame to take the narrow win.

No individual stats were reported.

Tate (13-8) travels to Niceville at 7 p.m. Friday. West Florida (11-10) hosts Pace on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

West Florida Baptist Academy 58, Jones Christian Academy 43: The Conquerors claimed their 15th win this season during a homecoming victory over the Warrior. Stats were unavailable.

WFBA (15-11) plays at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Santa Rosa Christian. On Friday, JCA (5-3) plays host to Full Life Christian Academy (Miss.).

Central Christian (Ala.) 50, Pensacola Christian Academy 49: The Warriors were barely clipped by the Saints. Stats were unavailable.

PCA (8-10) plays at 6:45 p.m. Friday at home against Lighthouse Baptist Academy.

Baker 46, Central 39: Central scored just 10 points in the first half, and Baker warded off a rallying Jaguars squad to hold onto victory.

The Gators went up 23-10 at halftime, before Central started to claw back. It was 31-23 in favor of Baker headed into the fourth frame, and while Central scored 16 points in the final stanza, Baker had just as much offense to secure victory.

Central (10-10) hosts Jay on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls basketball

Pace 61, Florida State University High School 59: The last two games for the Patriots have been decided by one possession. And Pace has been the victor in both of them.

No quarter-by-quarter scores were provided, nor were any stats.

The second-best team in District 1-6A, Pace travels to Niceville at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The two teams just met on Jan. 18, where Niceville won, 42-33, while the Patriots were in the middle of a grueling four-game week.

Gulf Breeze 47, Escambia 28: Now riding a four-game win streak, the Dolphins earned a win on the road – concluding a five-game stretch of road games for Gulf Breeze.

No quarter-by-quarter scores nor stats were provided.

Gulf Breeze (16-6) returns to action on Tuesday against Jay at 6:45 p.m. Escambia (1-13) hosts Elberta (Alabama) at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

East Hill Christian 33, Tate 19: The Eagles snapped a five-game losing skid against Tate, which has now lost back-to-back games.

No quarter-by-quarter scores nor any stats were provided.

Tate (4-10) hosts Rocky Bayou Christian at 6 p.m. Friday. East Hill Christian (2-11) hosts Calvary Christian Academy at 5 p.m. Friday.
