Texas Tech football announces sellout of Big 12 home opener vs. Houston
There's no hotter ticket than the Texas Tech football team right now.
Tech athletics announced Thursday that the Red Raiders' Sept. 30 Big 12 home opener against Houston has officially sold out.
This marks the second individual game to be sold out with the Sept. 9 home opener against Oregon having reached that feat earlier this month.
Season tickets were sold out last Friday. Due to the on-going construction on Jones AT&T Stadium, Tech's attendance capacity for home games will be 56,200. There were a total of 31,649 season tickets sold.
Roughly 12,000 tickets are reserved for the TTU student body, which will occupy the majority of the lower bowl on the east side of the stadium.
Also Thursday, Tech announced it has received "significant financial commitments" from former football letterwinners Rudy Renda and Tim Winn.
The monetary gifts are being put toward the Dustin R. Womble Football Center, the $220 million project in the south end zone that has limited Tech's attendance capacity for the 2023 season. The money put up by Renda and Winn has helped the fundraising reach more than $95 million.
For their contributions, the players' lounge in the Womble Football Center will be named the "Rudy Renda and Tim Winn Players' Lounge."
Renda and Winn both lettered at Tech from 1997-99 in Spike Dykes' final three years as head coach. The pair went into business together along with partner Frank Renda to purchase Southland Holdings, a tunneling company based in Roanoke, Texas.
The duo each serve as executive vice president and co-chief operating officer for Southland Holdings, which was ranked among the top-70 general contractors based in the U.S. by Engineering News-Record Magazine, according to the release.
Tech soccer
The Texas Tech soccer team was picked fifth in the preseason Big 12 women's soccer poll, which was released Thursday.
The Red Raiders received 117 votes in the poll, which was voted on by league coaches. Newcomer BYU edged TCU for the top spot in the poll, followed by Texas and West Virginia.
Tech senior defender Hannah Anderson was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team on Wednesday. Anderson was a first-team all-conference selection a year ago.
The Red Raiders are slated for an exhibition at Denver on Friday. The season opener is Aug. 17 at New Mexico and the home opener is slated for Aug. 20 against New Mexico State.
