Texas Tech baseball: Previewing Texas-Arlington

ARLINGTON — The Texas Tech baseball team won two of three in the season-opening Shriners Children's College Showdown over the weekend, and after the day off the Red Raiders have two games left to play at Globe Life Field.

No. 22 Tech (2-1) takes on Texas-Arlington (2-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday and No. 7 Oregon State (4-0) at noon Wednesday before returning to Lubbock for a home opening series this weekend against Texas Southern.

The Red Raiders lost to Tennessee 6-2 on Friday, beat Nebraska 6-3 on Saturday and downed Oregon 11-7 on Sunday. The Red Raiders' top hitters for the weekend were outfielders Owen Washburn (six hits in 12 at-bats), Damian Bravo (five hits in 10 at-bats) and Austin Green (five hits in 11 at-bats). Green had a home run and five runs batted in, and Bravo has four RBI.

"For opening weekend, getting to come to this venue and play the three teams we played, we got a lot of feedback, individually and collectively," Tech coach Tim Tadlock said.

Texas-Arlington, 29-29 last season, split a four-game road series over the weekend at Texas-San Antonio.

UTA center fielder Garrison Berkley was a preseason all-Western Athletic Conference selection. The junior from Aledo started all 58 games last season and led the Mavericks in multiple statistical categories: batting average (.365), hits (85), doubles (20), on-base percentage (.457), at-bats (233), runs (60) and total bases (121). He had four homers and 38 RBI.

Among the Mavs' other top returnees are designated hitter Cade Sumbler (.259-7-22 in 2023), second baseman Ryan Black (.336-7-57) and right fielder Tyson Pointer (.303-10-51).

Tech swept a two-game series from UTA last March in Lubbock, winning 10-1 and 14-7.

Oregon State, playing in the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona, won two games against Minnesota and one each against New Mexico and Cal State-Bakersfield.
