Texas' Tanner Witt announces return for senior year with 'unfinished business'

"Unfinished business."

Despite being picked in the 18th round by the Orioles in the MLB draft, pitcher Tanner Witt has announced that he will return to Texas for his senior year.

Witt was a highly touted prospect out of high school, regarded as a late first-round pick, but the right-hander was stout in his commitment to Texas. He began his career with a strong freshman season and was slated to be one of the top starters in 2022. Witt tore his UCL after two games, though, leading to season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The pitcher was nowhere near his previous form when he returned midway through last season. Texas used him sparingly, but strong innings were few and far between as Witt racked up 11 innings, eight strikeouts and a 10.97 ERA. He was projected as MLB.com's 76th-ranked prospect before the draft, but the pitcher was passed over for other UT pitchers such as Lucas Gordon, Zane Morehouse and Travis Sthele.

Each of those players also have college eligibility left and the opportunity to return to school if they wish.

Witt will now be hoping to regain his pre-injury form as a senior with the Longhorns.
