Another experienced quarterback has hit the graduate transfer market.

Texas A&M’s Nick Starkel announced Tuesday night that he has decided to pursue a graduate transfer. In a message posted on Twitter, Starkel said he will graduate from Texas A&M this summer, allowing him to play his final two seasons of eligibility at another school without sitting out a year.

“I will always cherish my time at Texas A&M. I will be an Aggie for life,” Starkel said. “I am also excited to play more football. I will explore finishing my final two years of eligibility at another program.”

Starkel opened the 2017 season as A&M’s starting quarterback, but broke his ankle in the team’s season-opening loss to UCLA. He returned late in the year and started the team’s final four games, including throwing for 499 yards and four touchdowns in the Aggies’ Belk Bowl loss to Wake Forest.

Kevin Sumlin was fired at the end of the 2017 season and the school hired Jimbo Fisher. Fisher opened up the quarterback competition and Starkel ended up losing the starting role to Kellen Mond. Starkel saw action in four games, but attempted only 22 passes on the year. Overall in 11 games at A&M, Starkel threw for 1,962 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 60.8 percent of his passes.

Starkel’s departure leaves sophomore Connor Blumrick, redshirt freshman James Foster and true freshman Zach Calzada behind Mond on the depth chart.

Who are the other available graduate transfer QBs?

Starkel will be an attractive option for a school in need of quarterback help in 2019. Once his name is listed in the NCAA’s transfer database, coaches from other schools will be free to contact him.

There has already been an array of movement among quarterbacks this offseason, and Starkel joins a small group of graduate transfer options. Shane Buechele (Texas) is the most notable of the group, but Ty Storey (Arkansas) and Ross Bowers (Cal) are also options with starting experience.

Other quarterbacks who have transferred this offseason include Kelly Bryant (Clemson to Missouri), Ben Hicks (SMU to Arkansas), Brandon Wimbush (Notre Dame to UCF) and Jalen Hurts (Alabama to Oklahoma). All will be eligible to play in 2019.
