Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher alleges Miami simulated snap count in Week 2 loss: 'They clapped'

Jimbo Fisher's Texas A&M team gave up a whopping 48 points to Miami in their Saturday loss, handing the Aggies the latest disappointment of the Fisher era.

While talk of Fisher's unsurmountable buyout continues to swirl, Fisher has no choice but to look ahead following the 48-33 defeat. Still, he does take issue with one aspect of the Hurricanes' alleged antics in the loss.

A&M-MIAMI SCORE Aggies fall to Tyler Van Dyke, Hurricanes

Fisher alleges Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes simulated a snap in a key situation: After Texas A&M scored with 2:29 left in the third quarter — bringing the score to a manageable 31-26 deficit — Fisher said the Miami defense clapped to get Texas A&M to snap the ball early on the 2-point attempt. If the Aggies had converted, it would have moved to the score to 31-28.

“There was a snap early,” Fisher said. “They clapped. They simulated our snap count and our guys heard the clap, and they snapped the ball. We had a whole play, like a goal-line play. What happened was the ball got snapped early because they simulated the snap count and clapped their hands and our center snapped the ball.”

The play can be found at the 17:40 mark of the condensed game below, and it does indeed feature a miscue snap that comes while quarterback Connor Weigman attempted to align the Aggie offense. It appears Hurricanes safety James Williams is the person to whom Fisher referred, though it's impossible to decipher whether the action was ill-intended.

In that case, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty would have resulted in the Aggies moving half the distance to the goal. Texas A&M, of course, has bigger issues to face down than this play.

D.J. Durkin's defense gave up 48 points (technically 41, thanks to a kick return touchdown), marking the third time his defense has given up 40-plus in two seasons with the Aggies. While this miscue could have had a butterfly effect on the outcome of the game — it did come in a tight situation — Fisher's issues will only serve as a warning for future officials.
