Texans ‘all-in’ after trading for Stefon Diggs
Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz reacts to Houston’s acquisition of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs and explains why the team is in a solid position to contend with the top teams in the AFC.

JASON FITZ: The Houston Texans are all in, and why wouldn't they be? Let's be real for a minute, the trade for Stefon Diggs brings them a superstar wide receiver. And this is the luxury you have when you're coming off of a draft where you've identified your quarterback of the future. For everything we saw from CJ Stroud, let's remember we didn't expect any of that. Nobody did. Even if you were a massive fan of the pick, expecting CJ to do historic things in his rookie season at the quarterback position was far fetched.
Now, what the Texans have told you is that they've looked around, especially considering they gave up assets and money for a receiver in a year where the draft is deep at that position. They're telling you they don't want to develop. They don't want to wait. They want to go all in right now on trying to win. Why not?
Clearly, if we look at this and we look at the division, in a division where Indianapolis still can't be sure what they have in Anthony Richardson-- we didn't see enough of him to know. Jacksonville seems to not be able to find a way to get over the hump and maximize Trevor Lawrence. And the Titans, while they're investing, still have a ton of question marks. If you're the Texans, this feels like your strike now opportunity. Plus, you're doing it with a head coach that seems to have the pulse of the organization, the pulse of the team, and has a great mind defensively.
You've taken one need off the plate, if you believed that wide receiver was even a need. I'm not sure we did. And you've given yourself more flexibility and freedom going into the draft to simply be-- and this is a luxury-- best player available. Every single conversation we have today about Houston needs to think back to a year ago and the same team that we were talking about, a team that looked absolutely lost, where nobody was going to want the job and nobody was going to want to play there.
It took one home run of a draft, not just CJ but a home run of a draft with a great hire at head coach, and the entire concept of who the Texans are have changed. They're showing that today by going all in while they're under that rookie deal with a guy they know is their future. There is no reason to think that the Texans aren't a playoff team. And then when you take the next step forward, there's no reason to think today on paper they can't challenge anybody in the AFC.
