Tennessee Titans grades vs. L.A. Chargers: Unpacking Week 2 OT win at Nissan Stadium

With a comeback win, the Tennessee Titans got their season back on track.

The Titans defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 27-24 in overtime on Sunday at Nissan Stadium on the back of a late touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Tannehill to receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, followed by a crucial stop from the defense and Nick Folk's 41-year field goal.

The Titans (1-1) improved in plenty of areas where they had struggled in Week 1, most notably in the passing game and by getting off the field at the right times.

Here are The Tennessean's grades for Sunday's game.

Offense: B

Give the offense credit for adjusting and figuring things out midgame. Through the first quarter and a half, things looked even worse than Week 1, especially for an offensive line that allowed drive-ending sacks on the first three possessions.

But from there, things actually went pretty well. Tannehill was efficient. Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears made the best of their opportunities. Receiver Treylon Burks and tight end Chig Okonkwo made plays in the passing game. And the protection improved.

As Tannehill says, it was a low bar to clear to be better than Week 1's performance. But the Titans cleared the hurdle.

Defense: B

When the Titans' defense needed to get off the field, it usually did. The Chargers were just 2-for-14 on third downs and had to settle for two red zone field goals.

That said, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had a ton of success throwing to the sideline, taking advantage of the lack of depth in the Titans' secondary and daring the their cornerbacks to make plays in space. As is so often the case, their run defense and pass rush produced by the defensive backs couldn't finish off the trifecta, allowing big plays and methodical gainer alike.

Those issues seemingly disappeared in overtime, when the secondary forced Herbert into three incompletions and a quick punt to set up the Titans' winning drive.

Special teams: A

Ryan Stonehouse collected a whopping 306 gross punting yards, but the Chargers did a good job of returning his long punts, averaging more than 15 yards per return. There wasn't much else of note on special teams in regulation, but in overtime the unit made itself known.

Rookie Kearis Jackson returned a punt 11 yards to give the offense good field position and Folk hammered home the winning kick in the rain to move his field goal mark to 7-for-7 this season.

Coaching: A-

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly deserves some points for getting creative in the red zone after they struggled in scoring territory last week. Tannehill scampered in for a 12-yard touchdown run on a triple-option look where he was in the shotgun with Henry and Spears.

The move to swap Xavier Newman for Dillon Radunz at guard in the first half seemed to pay off, and the substitutions on the defensive line seemed to keep players like defensive tackle Teair Tart fresh to make big plays late. Pre-snap penalties were an issue again, deflating the grade, but overall the Titans certainly out-coached the Chargers.
