Tarsi leading Rambler volleyball early, Harbor freshman Juneau off to huge start

BOYNE CITY — One of the biggest questions heading into the season for the Boyne City volleyball team was who was going to pick up the net play with Area Player of the Year Morgan Deming gone.

So far, now a tournament and a quad into 2023, that answer appears to be everyone.

And it’s working for first-year head coach Tyla Coates.

Boyne City hosted a trio of programs Tuesday, topping Bellaire (25-18, 25-17), Onaway (25-13, 25-15) and Alpena (25-13, 22-25, 15-5) to stay unbeaten on the season.

“After winning on Saturday I felt as if we had a huge target on our back,” said Coates. “Especially with meeting Bellaire and Onaway again. They were for sure coming for us.”

Senior leader Ava Tarsi led in assists (28), kills (13) and aces (5) on the night, while Elly Wilcox had 10 kills and four aces, Ameilia Dunstan and Josie Wilson each had nine kills and Aubrey Burns had 17 digs and five aces. Brianna Ager also had nine digs.

Charlevoix at Kingsley 

KINGSLEY — Charlevoix volleyball had an up and down night on the road in Kingsley Wednesday, dropping to Manton and Kingsley, before beating Escanaba (25-22, 25-23).

“A lot of inconsistency on the court in many aspects of the games at different times,” Charlevoix coach Audra Randall said. “It’s still early in the season but we are looking to make some big strides in our game.”

Addison Boop led with 19 kills, 18 digs and four aces, Aeryn Larson had 14 kills and four blocks, Anna Kemp had 28 digs, Abbey Wright, 13 kills and Kylee Rice, 12 kills and 21 assists. Ava Boss also had 36 assists and five aces.

Petoskey at Sault Tourney 

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Petoskey volleyball team opened the season with an overall tournament title in Sault Ste. Marie recently, without dropping a set.

Petoskey earned wins over Marquette, Houghton, Sault Ste. Marie and Rudyard in pool play, then Houghton in the semis and Marquette in the finals.

First-year head coach Megan Tompkins was pleased with the play of Caitlyn Matelski at the net and Sarah Bailey in her first varsity game. Tompkins also applauded the play of Lucy Tarachas and Alison Bailey on the defensive side.

Match scores and complete stats were not available.

SOCCER 

Harbor Soccer starts 3-0 

SAULT STE. MARIE — It’s a hot start to the season for the Harbor Springs boys’ soccer team, as they’ve now opened the season 3-0, all coming in shutouts.

The Rams have now topped Glen Lake (4-0), Alpena (5-0) and Sault Ste. Marie (8-0).

Freshman Henry Juneau scored twice against the Lakers, Everett Shepherd had one and MC Davis also had one.

Against Alpena, Sam Miller scored a pair, Juneau had two and two assists and Charlie Baker had a goal and assist. Davis and Aaron Baughman also each had an assist.

In the most recent mercy over the Sault, Juneau scored four goals, Shepherd added two scores and Miller had a goal and assist. Niko Reskevics also had a goal and two assists and Baker assisted twice.

Grayson Rife has also come up big in goal, which included 14 saves through the first two games.

“We’re really happy with the play that we’ve been getting out of sophomore goalie Grayson Rife,” Harbor coach Jeff Suffolk said. “He’s really stepped up early this season and had some complete games. Henry has had a great preseason and has been connecting with our older players right away. We’re looking for leadership out of our seniors this year. Though there’s not many of them, it’s an effective group.”

Harbor Light 4, Burt Lake NMCA 1 

HARBOR SPRINGS — Harbor Light Christian soccer opened the season with a 4-1 victory over Burt Lake NMCA recently.

Seniors David Chamberlin and Kirk Rose each scored a pair of goals for the Swordsmen (1-0). Vaughn Henagan also earned the win in net for Harbor Light, making over 20 saves in goal.

Charlevoix 3, Suttons Bay 3 

SUTTONS BAY — The Charlevoix boys’ soccer team rebounded from a tough loss in the opener and put a tie on the board against Suttons Bay Wednesday, 3-3.

The Rayders (0-1-1) had three different players find the net, which included Joe Gaffney, Benjen Sheaffer and Emmett Bergmann. Braylen Phillips also made 12 saves in goal for the Rayders, while keeping Charlevoix in it throughout the night.
