Tampa product, Mets star Pete Alonso to host charity event at Plant High

Tampa-born big-league All-Star Pete Alonso will host his second annual Battle for the Bay charity event from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Plant High.

The Mets first baseman is expected to be joined by new teammate Harrison Bader, the RaysRandy Arozarena and Ryan Pepiot, and former big-leaguers Matt Joyce, Travis Hafner and Xavier Scruggs, among others.

The event includes a home run derby featuring baseball and softball players ages 12-16, interactive games and activities (including a pop-up baseball card shop), onsite pet adoption, food trucks, and more.

Tickets are $15-$75, with proceeds to The Alonso Foundation going toward field refurbishment and equipment for local youth programs. See alonsofoundation.org for details. West Tampa Little League was the beneficiary of last year’s event.

Alonso, who, with his wife, Haley, launched the foundation in 2020, will be honored at Saturday’s Gasparilla Children’s Parade as the Tampa Bay Community Hero.

“Giving back to the Tampa community is super important to us, and building on last year’s success with this incredible and popular venue is so exciting,” Alonso said in a news release.

“Our partnership with the City of Tampa to form a fund that refurbishes and improves area fields is critical to enabling kids to safely enjoy the game that has given us so much. Haley and I are dedicated to building up the youth here where we live in Tampa and are so thankful that our mission and this event were so deeply embraced.”

International soccer set for Al Lang Stadium

Famed Brazilian soccer team CR Flamengo will face Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union in an exhibition match at Al Lang Stadium at 2 p.m. Sunday as part of the global FC Series. The Union squad includes former East Lake High star and Clearwater Chargers product Nathan Harriel. For tickets, see rowdiessoccer.com.
