The Jacksonville Jaguars had their eighth padded practice of the year Tuesday for what was a team based drill day. It had it’s highs and lows but there were plenty of things to take away from it when looking at what the media was able to provide.

Here are some of the key tidbits we gathered from the day:

Davon Hamilton has himself a day in the trenches

The name who was mentioned the most frequently Tuesday was that of DaVon Hamilton, who the Jags drafted in the third-round of April’s draft. According to John Reid of The Florida Times-Union, veteran Tyler Shatley and second-year player Blake Hance in particular are players who Hamilton has been able to overpower, and that was the case once again today.

Hamilton will be a key to the Jags’ defensive line in 2020, especially with veteran Al Woods opting out with concerns for the coronavirus. He’s also a player I’ve stated could be the biggest surprise of 2020 because he’s showed an interesting mix of size, and athleticism while at Ohio State.

Terry Godwin is building momentum and fighting hard for a roster spot

Another player who we deemed as a sleeper to make some noise in the preseason, Terry Godwin, has emerged over the last few practice sessions. First Coast News’ Mia O’Brien stated that Godwin was pretty active Tuesday, catching no less than five balls during team drills. He also snagged a touchdown in red-zone drills and many feel he’s the No. 7 receiver on the roster at the moment.

Tre Herdon continues to garner steam

Many fans were concerned about third-year cornerback Tre Hernon, who struggled some last week, but he’s tightened his game up over the last few days. He’s been active around the ball, acquiring a pick and pass breakup on Sunday, and added two more pass breakups on camp stars Collin Johnson and D.J. Chark Jr. on Tuesday. This is noteworthy because Johnson gave Herndon some issues last week with a few one-handed circus catches.

It’s great to see Herndon gaining momentum and getting acclimated as the Jags’ first game will be against Philip Rivers (and the Indianapolis Colts), who give the Jags’ secondary fits. He’ll definitely be a player to watch heading forward as Luq Barcoo looks to be putting some heat on him with and impressive camp of his own.

Other notes and tidbits

• Jags defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich met with the media before practice and discussed some of the standouts he’s seen within his group like Taven Bryan and Dawuane Smoot.

• Smoot also met with the media to discuss how his offseason has gone and how his teammates on the defensive line have fared.

• The Jags added two players to their list of injured players Tuesday. Those players were safety Daniel Thomas (hamstring) and linebacker Dakota Allen (hip). Both sat out of practice alongside those who were injured heading into this week like Dede Westbrook (shoulder), Taven Bryan (knee bruise), and Quincy Williams (core muscle).

• Pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson also was given the day to rest, but it was scheduled by the staff.
