Szymoniak’s career-high 21 points spark Onaway girls basketball to 11th victory
CENTRAL LAKE – Marley Szymoniak might only be a sophomore, but she’s quickly becoming one of the best players on the Onaway girls basketball team.
On Tuesday, Szymoniak delivered a career night by scoring 21 points for the Cardinals, who captured their 11th win of the season with a 59-28 victory at Central Lake.
"Marley really shot the ball well, especially from behind the arc,” Onaway coach John George said. “The rest of her team did a great job of finding her in fast breaks, contributing to her tally on the night. Charlotte (Box) also had a great scoring night for us. Truthfully, it was a great effort by all of our kids.”
The Cardinals (11-4, 8-4 Ski Valley Conference) also received 15 points from Box, eight from Andrea Ruppert, and seven from Ema DeMaestri.
“This is the best game we have played all year,” George said. “We looked solid on offense and played really good defense down the stretch. Defensively, we were able to get the press working, controlling the tempo and taking the lead back after (Central Lake) scored the first bucket of the game. We took the lead and never looked back.”

In a recent 50-14 victory over Forest Area, Szymoniak also led the Cardinals with 12 points, while Kailyn George finished with nine, DeMaestri tallied seven, Natalie Hyde and Sydney Peel each scored six, and Box chipped in with five.
Onaway travels to face Brimley on Monday, Feb. 12.
