SUMMER STARS: 10 Jacksonville-area players have lined up in MLB's All-Star Game

The Midsummer Classic is turning 90.

Nearly a century ago — on July 6, 1933, at Chicago's Comiskey Park, to be precise — Major League Baseball's All-Star Game was born. And while it took a half-century for a player from a Jacksonville-area high school to climb onto the All-Star list, over the last three and a half decades, ballplayers from the First Coast have made their mark in the summertime tradition.

When it comes to All-Star Game selection, there are few guarantees. Several other Jacksonville-area players, like Storm Davis (University Christian), Brett Myers (Englewood) and Rick Wilkins (Bolles), missed out on the All-Star tradition despite outstanding seasons. And former Bolles slugger Chipper Jones, chosen for the All-Star Game an area-high eight times, wasn't selected in 1999 despite eventually winning Most Valuable Player honors at season's end.

Javier Baez

School: Arlington Country Day

All-Star Games: 2018, 2019 (both with Cubs)

Notable: MVP of the National League Championship Series with the Cubs in 2016, the versatile Baez not only started consecutive All-Star Games but played different positions, starting at second base in 2018 and shortstop in 2019. He went 1 for 3 as the leadoff hitter in the former All-Star appearance.

Billy Butler

School: Wolfson

All-Star Game: 2012 (with Royals)

Notable: In terms of distance, Butler's All-Star trip was as short as it gets. The designated hitter lined up for the All-Star Game on home soil at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, pinch-hitting for David Ortiz and finishing 0 for 2 in the American League's 8-0 loss.

Vince Coleman

School: Raines

All-Star Games: 1988, 1989 (both with Cardinals)

Notable: The six-time National League stolen base champion got the chance to shine on the basepaths in 1988. Batting leadoff and playing left field, he singled, stole second and came around to score the NL's only run in a 2-1 loss at Riverfront Stadium. Coleman also got into the 1989 game as a pinch-runner for Kevin Mitchell.

Glenn Davis

School: University Christian

All-Star Games: 1986, 1989 (both with Astros)

Notable: The Astros' power-hitting first baseman didn't start the 1989 All-Star Game, but he made an impact after entering for the San Francisco Giants' Will Clark. Davis singled and walked in his two plate appearances, and scored an eighth-inning run on an RBI single by the Phillies' Von Hayes in the National League's 5-3 loss. In 1986, playing on home turf in the Astrodome, Davis entered as an eighth-inning pinch-hitter and popped out.

Chipper Jones

School: Bolles

All-Star Games: 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2011, 2012 (all with Braves)

Notable: A five-time All-Star starter at third base (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2008), the Hall of Fame Braves slugger unsurprisingly holds many of the Jacksonville area's records for the game. Jones went 3 for 3 in the 2000 All-Star Game at Atlanta's Turner Field, including a solo home run — still the only All-Star long ball for a local — against James Baldwin of the White Sox. He scored three runs in All-Star Games, also crossing the plate in 1996 and 1998. For his career, he batted 6 for 14 (.429) in All-Star appearances.

Howie Kendrick

School: West Nassau

All-Star Games: 2011 (with Angels)

Notable: Kendrick created highlights to remember in the Fall Classic but not so much in the Midsummer Classic, where he appeared once in 2011. He entered to play second base in the fifth inning but hit a groundout in his only plate appearance as the American League lost 5-1 at Chase Field.

Daniel Murphy

School: Englewood

All-Star Games: 2014 (with Mets), 2016, 2017 (both with Nationals)

Notable: As a member of the Nationals in 2016, Murphy achieved an uncommon feat for an All-Star Game by reaching base three times off the bench, twice on singles and once on a fielding error. He struck out in a reserve role in 2014 and went 1 for 2 as the starting second baseman and No. 5 hitter in the 2017 game.

Darren O'Day

School: Bishop Kenny

All-Star Game: 2015 (with Orioles)

Notable: It's rare for a middle reliever to get an All-Star opportunity, but O'Day made the American League roster in 2015 in a superb season that finished with a 1.52 ERA. O'Day did not pitch in the AL's 6-3 victory at the Great American Ball Park.

Jonathan Papelbon

School: Bishop Kenny

All-Star Games: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 (all with Red Sox), 2012, 2015 (both with Phillies)

Notable: Papelbon's six All-Star appearances rank behind only Chipper Jones in Northeast Florida history. While he didn't take the field in 2006 or 2015, the closer played on four other occasions: He pitched a scoreless eighth inning in 2007, allowed an unearned run during the 15-inning marathon game in 2008, picked up the win — the only local to do so in an All-Star Game — with a perfect seventh inning in 2009 and got the final out of the NL's 8-0 shutout win in 2012.

Adam Wainwright

School: Glynn Academy

All-Star Games: 2010, 2013, 2014 (all with Cardinals)

Notable: The Cardinals veteran is the only Jacksonville-area pitcher to land an All-Star Game starting assignment, a less-than-successful outing in 2014. Wainwright took the loss after yielding three runs in the first inning of a 5-3 loss, getting hit hard: a pitch clubbed for a double by the retiring Derek Jeter, a Mike Trout triple and a Miguel Cabrera home run. He tossed a scoreless inning in relief in 2010, and was selected but did not play in 2013.
