Sturgis girls cruise to another track dual win

PAW PAW — Fueled by 13 first-place finishes on Tuesday, the Sturgis girls ran away from Paw Paw in track and field action.

The Lady Trojans piled up a 112-25 victory on the day.

"Today our girls had the opportunity to try some new events and they competed well. I am proud of some of our newcomers who are pushing themselves beyond what they thought they are capable of doing," Sturgis girls' coach Lesley Starkey said. "To see our athletes continue to gain confidence in encouraging, especially as we head into a very competitive part of our season."

Tessa Hatt paced the field in the mile run, she ran a time of 5:51.14. Emma Garbine was second at 6:08.38.

The Lady Trojans dominated the relay events, winning all four. The 400 relay saw Tenley Banaszak, Angela Cary, Hannah Garbine and Keyanna O'Tey post a time of 50.24 seconds; the 800 relay won as Jacqueline Flores Fortanel, Riley Eicher, Adison Nettleman and O'Tey ran a time of 1:49.13, that was their fastest time of the year.

The mile relay was won by Sydney Bir, Eicher, Flores Fortanel and Berkley Holtz at 4:34.27. In the two-mile relay, Sturgis' team of Garbine, Eleanor Park, Kenzie Eicher and Bir posted a time of 11:43.91.

O'Tey won two events — the 100 dash (12.56 seconds) and the high jump at 4-8 feet.

Bir won two events as well — the 200 (27.79 seconds) and the 400 (1:04.73).

Sturgis finished with a sweep of the long jump as well. Garbine won at 15-6.5 feet, Cary was second at 14-7.5 feet and Nettleman came in third at 14-4.5 feet. Each of these was a lifetime best leap.

Garbine finished second in the 100 (13.68) and Banaszak was second in the 200 (27.98). Holtz was second in the 800 (2:36.26).

Kylie Brooks won the 100 hurdles (17.83) and Juliet Mendoza Rangel came in first for the 300 hurdles at 55.18.

Nettleman and Banaszak tied for second in the high jump, clearing 4-6 feet.

Kenzy Triezenberg won the pole vault at 8-9 feet. Kaylee Draper was second at 7-6 feet.
