Who is the Storm Works Roofing Athlete of the Week in Girls Volleyball? You tell us

One month into the high school girls volleyball season, and we're seeing some pretty clear patterns.

In Division I, La Salle, North Kingstown, Portsmouth and Coventry are all in the mix for the top spots — as is Chariho, which remains unbeaten entering this week, at 6-0 in league play.

In Division II, Cumberland and East Providence are 7-0 in league play, with Middletown and Mt. Hope just 1 game off the pace.

Tolman remains the class of Division III, at 7-0, while Juanita Sanchez (6-3) and Burrillville (5-1) are hot on the Tigers' heels.

And in Division IV, Shea High School's record remains unblemished, at 8-0, with Mt. Pleasant, 6-1, giving chase.

That's the overview, but let's zoom in a bit and see who the top performers were for last week. As usual, we saw some players go above and beyond (the net) to help their team earn the W. So, here are the nominees for the Storm Works Roofing Athlete of the Week in Girls Volleyball.

A reminder that coaches are asked to send in the results each night. You can reach us Monday-Friday from 6-10 p.m. at (401) 277-7340 or at pjsports@providencejournal.com.

Hailey Labonte, Portsmouth

The Patriots enter the week at 5-2 in Division I, and Labonte, a junior, has a strong hand in that record. Last week, she had 10 kills, 9 digs and 3 aces in Portsmouth's 3-0 victory over East Greenwich in a Div. I crossover.

Kenzie Cleary, Burrillville

In case you missed it, Cleary was last week's Storm Works Athlete of the Week in Girls Volleyball, after her 12-kill performance in a shutout of Woonsocket. Well, the Broncos (5-1) junior turned in another stellar outing in a 3-0 victory over Narragansett last week. Cleary recorded 16 kills and 3 blocks in the Division III crossover matchup.

Kasyra Fernandes, Shea

As mentioned above, the Raiders enter the week unbeaten in Division IV, and Fernandes is a big reason for their success. Last week, the Shea senior recorded 11 kills, 11 aces and 11 digs — apparently 11 is her lucky number — in a 3-1 victory over Mount Pleasant. The win pushed Shea to 8-0 on the season.

Gabriela Jackson, East Greenwich

The Avengers reside smack in the middle of the Division I standings and there's still plenty of time to change that this season. Jackson is one of the reasons EG is hanging around this fall, and her performance against Prout last week is a good example. The senior hitter turned in 11 kills, 9 digs and 4 blocks in the 3-1 victory over the Crusaders.

Casey Weaver, Lincoln

Normally the Athlete of the Week nominees come from the winning team, but it's hard to ignore performances like these. Weaver, a senior, had two monster nights for the Lions, but in losses. Against Mt. Hope, she recorded a whopping 28 kills in a 3-0 setback; and a couple of nights later, she recorded 21 kills in a 3-1 loss to Middletown. The Lions are sitting at 3-3 on the season in Division II.
