The Athletic predicts LB Jerome Baker as free agent signing for Steelers
With an uncertain timeline for the return of inside linebacker Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander likely to hit free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers (again) find themselves with a need at the position.
The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly foresees the Steelers snagging soon-to-be free agent Jerome Baker after his anticipated release from the Miami Dolphins.
“Would not be stunned if Steelers bring in Jerome Baker at ILB. Actually, I’d say there is a good chance,” Kaboly tweeted.
The six-year veteran was set to make $10.768 million in 2024 with a cap number north of $14 million. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the two parties couldn’t agree to terms on a reworked contract; however, should he not get a better offer from another team (ahem, the Steelers), Miami is said to be open to his return.
The Cleveland-born Baker, 27, was selected by Miami with its third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He delivered 587 tackles (31 for loss), 22.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, 21 defended passes and two touchdowns in 94 games (82 starts). Of his five total interceptions, two were last season.
The hurdle facing the Steelers: Finding a solid inside linebacker is a league-wide issue, and the draft doesn’t appear to be a solution. It’s another perceived weak linebacker class, and though Texas A&M’s Edgerrin Cooper seems to be the top player to go off the board, draft analysts are undecided about who even the top five players could be.
The Steelers are best to dip in the free agent pool for an ILB, and Baker would be an excellent get.
