State boys swimming and diving: Montevideo Thunder Hawks pick up some medals at state

Mar. 3—MINNEAPOLIS — Montevideo's two relay teams and Austin Dunn earned medals at the Class A state boys swimming and diving finals on Saturday.

All had top-eight finishes at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

The Thunder Hawks' 200-yard freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams each placed seventh, respectively. The 200 freestyle squad of Mickey Hess, Jaxon Wagner, Hayden Blom, Gavin Arends finished in 1 minute, 28.60 seconds and the 400 freestyle quartet of Hess, Arends, Nolan Christopher, Dunn finished in 3:17.22.

Dunn, a senior, finished seventh in the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.34. He was also 16th in the 100 freestyle (50.51).

Christopher took 11th place in the 200 freestyle (1:49.58). Hess was 13th in the 50 freestyle (22.12). Arends placed 15th in the 1-meter diving competition (284.25).

The Thunder Hawks finished with 73 points, good for a 13th place finish. Breck/Blake won the team title (327), followed by Saint Thomas Academy's 224 and Hutchinson's 209.

Willmar's 200 medley relay team (Evan Wallestad, Jacob Loerzel, David Lammers, Alex Marcus) was disqualified.
