Starting 5: Travis Perry adds to legacy; ex-Louisville football RB joins St. X staff, more

Kentucky basketball signee Travis Perry became the 10th player in U.S. history to score 5,000 points after scoring 22 points in Lyon County's 50-48 loss to Newport on Jan. 27. The feat adds to Perry's already-impressive resume.

During last season’s Sweet 16, Perry became the leading scorer in Kentucky high school boys basketball history. “King” Kelly Coleman, who amassed 4,337 points during four seasons (1952-56) at Wayland High School, was the previous record holder.

Bilal Powell, a former Louisville running back who ran for 1,405 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior and who played nine seasons in the NFL for the New York Jets, announced that he is joining St. Xavier coach Kevin Wallace's staff.

Kentucky gymnastics junior Makenzie Wilson was selected as SEC Specialist of the Week after she earned a perfect score on vault.

Wilson earned the first 10 at Rupp Arena after performing a front handspring pike with a half twist as she ended the meet's first rotation in the anchor position.

Her previous career- and season-high was a 9.975 against Auburn on March 3 last season. She has earned four individual wins on vault. Wilson's 10 was the first such mark for the Wildcats since Jenny Hansen posted the perfect score in 1996.

High school recruiting: Kentucky Mr. Football Daniel Thomas announces commitment

Bell County senior Daniel Thomas, the reigning Kentucky Mr. Football winner after running for 3,817 yards and 54 touchdowns in 2023, committed to play football for UVA-Wise on Jan. 30. Thomas holds season records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total points.

  • Bellarmine women's basketball is scheduled to host Kennesaw State at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Queens University of Charlotte at 1 p.m. Saturday.

  • Louisville women's lacrosse is scheduled to visit Denver on Friday.

  • Louisville track and field is set to compete at the Eagle Invite, hosted by Boston College, beginning Friday.

  • Bellarmine track and field is scheduled to compete beginning Friday at the GVSU Big Meet (Allendale, Michigan) and at the Music City Challenge (Nashville, Tennessee).

  • Louisville softball is set to open its season Friday at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, playing against LIU at 10 a.m. and against Georgetown at 2:30 p.m. The Cards are scheduled to face the Hoyas at 5 p.m. Saturday and Florida Gulf Coast at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

  • Bellarmine softball is scheduled to open its season Friday at the CSU Kickoff Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina. The Knights are set to play Siena at 10 a.m. and Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Bellarmine is scheduled to play Siena at 10 a.m. and Saint Francis at 12:30 p.m.

  • Louisville women's tennis is scheduled to visit Huntington, West Virginia, to play Marshall at noon Friday and Furman at noon Saturday.

  • Louisville men's tennis is set to host Cornell at 5 p.m. Friday.

  • Bellarmine women's tennis is scheduled to host Murray State at 10 a.m. Saturday and Tennessee State at 3 p.m. Saturday.

  • Bellarmine wrestling has two meets scheduled Friday in Lexington, Virginia: 3 p.m. against LIU and 5 p.m. against VMI.
