Stars of the Week! These players had standout performances in track, swimming, boys basketball

As the regular season comes to a close, the milestones and achievements of local student-athletes are piling up. Check out the top performances from the week of Jan. 29 in boys basketball, indoor track and swimming.

New all-time scoring leaders at Wood, Tennent

Jalil Bethea, Archbishop Wood

The senior standout broke Archbishop Wood’s all-time scoring record on Sunday afternoon. The Miami commit scored 17 points in the win against Devon Prep to break Rahsool Diggins’ (UMass) record of 1,513 points, set in 2021. Bethea finished the game with 1,517 career points, and will continue to add to that total in the final week of PCL play and the playoffs.

Kirby Mooney, William Tennent

On Friday night, the William Tennent senior became the school's boys basketball career scoring leader, surpassing Frank Moultrie’s record of 1,343 points in 2002. Mooney clinched the record with a free throw one minute into the game against New Hope-Solebury, and finished with 28 points in the win.

  • Archbishop Wood head coach John Mosco recorded his 200th career victory as head coach of the Vikings in Sunday’s win over Devon Prep.

  • Quakertown head coach Tony DaCosta earned his 200th career win with the Panthers victory over New Hope-Solebury on Wednesday.

Top Performers in Boys Basketball

Emeer Coombs, Neshaminy

With one second remaining and his team down by two, Coombs hit an improbable catch-and-shoot 3-pointer to give Neshaminy a thrilling 49-48 win over Conestoga. He finished with a game-high 24 points. He was also a late-game hero in a win over CR North, sinking a pair of game-winning free throws with two seconds remaining to give Neshaminy a 60-59 victory.

Nick Parisi, La Salle  

The junior scored 27 points and had nine rebounds to key La Salle's 74-64 overtime win against Conwell-Egan, their first PCL win of the season. He helped the Explorers pick up another PCL win against Lansdale Catholic, scoring nine points.

Gabe Cerulli, CR South

The senior posted a double-double with a team-high 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Golden Hawks edged Pennsbury 40-39.

Ryan Wekluk, CR South

He scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to secure the Golden Hawks win over rival CR North.

Connor Taddei, Pennsbury

Taddei led the way with 14 points, including several clutch free throws down the stretch, to lead the Falcons to a huge SOL Patriot Division upset win over first-place Bensalem.

Ahmaar Godhania, North Penn

The junior hit a game-tying 3-pointer to force overtime, and finished with 30 points to lead the Knights to a 77-73 triple OT win against CB South. He finished with 13 points.

Norm Gee, North Penn

In the final seconds of triple overtime, Gee came up with a huge steal on an inbound pass and then went in for the game-sealing layup for the Knights. He also had a team-high 16 points against Souderton, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter of the 53-50 win.

Ben Harrison, CB South

Harrison led the Titans with 25 points in a triple OT loss to North Penn.

Adrien Varella, Holy Ghost

Varella paced the Firebirds with 27 points in a win over Pope John Paul II.

Liam Ross, New Hope-Solebury

Ross had a standout effort against William Tennent, scoring a game- and career-high 29 points in a close loss. He also led the Lions with 13 points in a loss to Quakertown.

Ryan Smith, Hatboro-Horsham

Smith had a game-high 18 points to lead the Hatters to a Senior Night win over Quakertown, and he scored 25 points in an OT loss to Springfield. He had 15 of his points in the second half to force overtime.

Shane Phillips, Hatboro-Horsham

Phillips had an outstanding night at the free throw line to secure the Hatters’ first league win in a 58-46 victory over Quakertown. He went 8-for-8 on free throws in the fourth quarter, and scored 13 points in the second half, finishing with 16.

Jeremiah Lee, Abington

The senior standout had a season-high 29 points, along with six steals, five rebounds and five assists, in a 76-69 win over Wissahickon.

Ivan Ryabov, George School

The sophomore hit five 3-pointers, on his way to a game-high 17 points in a win over Germantown Friends.

Chris D’Ambra, William Tennent

D’Ambra erupted for 33 points but the Panthers were edged by Cheltenham, 82-79.

Jadon Cybok, Upper Moreland

The junior sank four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 20 points in a win over Springfield.

Joell Idrovo, Solebury School

The senior scored his 1,000th career point in Saturday’s win over Shabach Christian. Idrovo finished with 20 points in an 83-80 OT win.

Tyler Simpson, Solebury School

Simpson led the way with 27 points in an 83-80 overtime win against Shabach Christian.

Indoor Track: 8th Annual Ocean Breeze Invitational

More than 4,500 track athletes from all over competed in the Ocean Breeze Invitational on Staten Island last weekend. Events are divided into several divisions, with Red the highest level. Here are some of the top finishes from area athletes:

Laura Leibiger, North Penn

The senior finished first in the girls White Pentathlon with 2,151 points. In her five events, she finished first in both the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.65 and the long jump (4.39 meters). Her other events were the 55-meter hurdles (11.12), high jump (1.27 meters), and shot put (6.88 meters).

Hannah Winters, Abington

She won the sophomore girls Red 55-meter dash with a time of 7.50 seconds.

Ava Tweddale, CB West

She took 7th place in the freshman girls White 55-meter dash in 8.28.

Madison Gee, North Penn

The senior was second in the girls Red triple jump with her 36-1.5 effort.

Julia Fiore, North Penn 

Fiore won the freshman girls shot put with her 27-0 toss.

Grace Patterson, Council Rock South

The senior took sixth place in the Red girls high jump with her leap of 5-2.

 Mimi Duffy, CB West

The senior was third in the girls Red 400-meter run with a time of 57.36, and had another third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a 24.87 time. Both times set school records in the events, and her 200-meter dash ranks as No. 2 in the state.

Kate Bradish, Neshaminy

The senior took 11th place in the girls one-mile Red run with a time of 5:14.50.

Gwen Hamilton, Archbishop Wood

The sophomore finished fourth in the girls Red 800-meter dash with a time of 2:09.89, and took fifth in the Red girls 400-meter dash with a time of 57.46.

Aliyah Larkins, North Penn

She was fifth in the sophomore girls long jump with a 15-7 jump.

Brooke Lobban, Upper Moreland

The senior finished in fifth place in the Red girls long jump with a leap of 17-11.

Molly Donaldson, Hatboro-Horsham

The junior finished seventh in the girls Red shot put with a 32-10.5 mark.

Ava Mignon, CB East

She won the freshman girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.78.

Paige Dougherty, CB East

She was the winner of the sophomore girls 800-meter run with a 2:25.27 finish.

Trip Campbell, North Penn

The junior took sixth place in the Red boys pentathlon with 3,057 points. His events were the 55-meter hurdles (8.50), long jump (5.79 meters), shot put (8.56 meters), high jump (1.87 meters), and 1,000-meter run (2:55.33).

Shawn Beatty, Pennsbury

He won the sophomore boys 55-meter dash with a time of 7.15.

Keith Bruce, Upper Moreland

He finished fourth in the sophomore boys 800-meter run with a 2:03.98 time.

Brady Ott, CR North

The senior took fourth place in the Red boys two-mile run, crossing the finish line in 9:20.33.

Cole Cassadei, La Salle 

The senior took third place in the boys Red one-mile run with his 4:21.69 finish.

Lucas Poliseno, CR North

He won the sophomore boys one-mile run with a time of 4:30.52.

Santino Rodriguez, Upper Moreland

He took second place in the freshman boys long jump with his 18-5.5 leap.

Anthony Conrey, Conwell-Egan

The senior finished fourth in the boys Red long jump with a 22-2.5 mark.

Luke Coleman, Abington

The senior finished second in the boys Red 400-meter dash with a 48.57 finish.

Nolan Yeagle, La Salle

The junior finished fourth in the boys Red one-mile run with a time of 4:22.55.

Nate Fehrman, CB West

The senior took sixth place in the Red boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.76.

Peter Murray, Abington

He finished eighth in the Red boys 800-meter run with his 1:57.04 time.

Bobby Franklin, La Salle

Franklin won the freshman boys 800-meter run with a 2:00.37 finish.

Will Stover, Souderton

The senior placed second in the Red boys pole vault with a mark of 13-6.

Inter- Ac Swimming & Diving Championships:

Emily Hamill, Germantown Academy

The junior took first place in the 100-yard freestyle (50.34) and 200-yard freestyle (1:48.84) at the Inter-Ac Girls Swimming Championships, helping the Patriots win the team title. She was also a part of the first-place 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Amelia Gipson, Germantown Academy

The freshman won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.65, and took second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:06.06 in the Inter-Ac Girls Swimming Championships. In addition, she won gold in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.

Brandon Fleck, Germantown Academy

The junior won two individual events, finishing first in the 50-yard freestyle (20.49) and the 100-yard freestyle (44.44) at the Inter-Ac Boys Swimming Championships, and two team events, in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays, helping the Patriots clinch first place.

Andy Zhou, Germantown Academy

The senior University of Pennsylvania commit took home gold in the 500 freestyle (4:30.77) and 100-yard breaststroke (56.72) in the Inter-Ac Boys Swimming Championships, as well as the 200- and 400-freestyle relays.

Brendan Hodgens, Germantown Academy

The senior took first place in the Inter-Ac Boys Diving Championships.

Maddie Evers, Germantown Academy

She won gold at the Inter-Ac Girls Diving Championships.
